Secretary Hyde defended farm price levels after drought scarred crops, saying inflation in retail food prices is unjustified. He cited no profiteering reports and warned the crisis should not hit consumers, noting cattle feed shortages drive some price rises.
Tonight at eight o clock President S A Dickerson opens the 27th annual chautauqua assembly with an eight day session. Opening comedy Mothers Millions by Randall Players kicks off the program. Elias Tamburitza Serenaders perform tomorrow afternoon at two with Lieut Julius Van der Lacht speaking at two thirty. The Tamburitza Players return in the evening. Friday features the Ten Four and Chester M Sanford delivering the afternoon lecture.
In Jacksonville on August 13 seven white boys under 20 were detained and charged after a Black man was fatally wounded by a 22-caliber bullet during a "war" game. Police stated the incident occurred as the group tested a public safety device amid a brief siren.
CAMP DODGE Aug 11 A Troop F correspondent reports a staged battle to teach cover tactics as officers watch from a hilltop. Troop members advance from a ditch and through thickets to engage a small enemy force, with one rider injured and buried with military honors. The writeup notes officer reliability and morale concerns, predicting another larger battle soon.
Authorities seek fingerprints of John Mercer, a Philadelphia youth whose car was used by robbers who killed R. G. Sproat of Tipton. Description matches one of the trio. State agents hope to trace two youthful bandits who stole from a Davenport store, then fled into Illinois. In Sterling, highway bandits held up John Simmons, a Clinton truck driver, with a gun and used a bottle to knock him unconscious while two young women sat on the running board seeking a jack.
Plans are under way for the district bar association of the sixth Iowa judicial district to meet in Washington on Thursday Sept. 4. Fifty or more attorneys from Keokuk Jasper Mahaska Poweshiek and Washington counties are expected. Washington county bar association president Col. J. Wilson and secretary T. A. Michels structured committees for reception dinner program and executive oversight. Livingston presides as district president and will chair the program at the country club with a dinner and recreation program expected. The last district convention was held in Washington five years ago.
HOOPESTON UL Aug. Larsen an 18 year old Rankin School student once hailed as a hero is condemned by a coroner jury for reckless driving that killed Mrs Frances Leonce Washburn and injured her husband Ray Washburn and others. The coroner jury sent the case to the September grand jury.
Aug 18 new airplane endurance record set at St Louis as Dale n and Forrest O Brine report all well after reaching 354 hours 41 minutes 20 seconds aloft. They earn 100 per hour for each hour above the previous record up to 7000 total with rain observed during the record run. Hawks After Record in Indianapolis another transcontinental attempt by Frank Hawks aims for a new speed mark from Los Angeles to New York with a 651 mile leg completed in 2 hours 41 minutes at an average speed of 237 mph.
The Legion Auxiliary met at Ft Dodge for a convention with a quartet contest to pick the best musical group in the afternoon. Evening events include a past presidents parley and the eight and forty dance as major activities.
The Y M C A Men club held a regular meeting last evening with plans to present the convention play at the International Convention in Wilkes Barre. Attendees include W F Bickel and Dick McCleery who will attend the Pennsylvania convention and may choose Little Rock or St Paul for next year’s site. The club supports several causes this summer including YMCA equipment, the junior college annual dinner, and groceries.
Col Charles A. Lindbergh, addressing Mass. officials in Williamstown, said American commercial aviation has progressed faster than any nation’s. He praised efforts toward international air commerce, noted regulations have been simplified and standardized, and urged expansion of passenger air travel and cross border routes with South America and Mexico. He traveled here from North Haven with his wife, remarking aviation’s infancy belies its potential.
The city board announced the purchase of a tenth of an acre for a proposed road extending northwest from town. Mrs. John Sampson sold the land with damages set. Rock Island railway cooperates on grading. The new road, an extension of West Fifth Street, will avoid rail crossings and connect to the county home and West Chester beyond the present bridge.
Arthur Babcock led fish rescue efforts at Sabula delivering 3,200 bass and 1,600 croppies to the Rock Island reservoir west of town. Conservationists urge careful handling of channel catfish minnow stock and storing fish under 12 inches as safeguards in river seining and stocking plans. A future consignment of channel catfish is anticipated with state purchases at five cents each.
Washington dispatch reports early returns from Nebraska Ohio Alabama and Oklahoma hinting at a fall battle in multiple contests. Nebraska pits Norris against Hitchcock with Weaver and Bryan on the Republican side. Ohio features Culloch versus Bulkley. Alabama shows Bankhead challenging former Gov. White. Oklahoma includes Gore facing Pine and Muray seeking governor.
Washington readers saw a lively air circus with parachute drops and demonstrations. Carl Menzer and Hartzler speakers highlighted acoustics while crowds paid 50 cents to watch from select points. Helen Hunter piloted a power glider from Omaha, with George Ingerich and a Stinson plane drawing crowds as Rapid Air Lines displayed a Ford tri motor and other craft.
The Washington air show drew thousands despite gate receipts being light. George Glazerich of Hawkeye Airways organized the program with 32 planes, parachute drops, and speed races drawing aviation fans.
