Farmers face severe troubles as unusual weather spans five weeks across many states. Prices rise for late fruits and vegetables and dairy products, with butter up about five cents since July. Beef may become scarcer but remains available in poorer quality. Government reports show sufficient staple crops but shortages for poultry and livestock feed.
In Iowa Aug 12 the Maquoketa River near Hartwick was dragged for the body of Alex Graham a butter maker at Ryan Iowa who drowned while fishing with his brother James then disappeared during a cross river attempt. Clarence Magh’t and Charles Kerri Graham are named as relatives with widow three daughters and one son surviving.
The Washington Club shifts its regular meeting from Friday to next week due to a town council session and a speaker’s delay. G. Baker, Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce secretary, will deliver remarks on new interstate railway rates. Anticipated topics include fall festival plans and progress reports from commuters.
Hundreds gathered at Washington Airport this morning as the field opened for an air circus. Delays hit the ten o'clock parachute drop with Fred Welch of Cedar Rapids preparing to leap around eleven. A hospital tent and ambulance stood ready near the entrance while scouts and officers managed the crowd. Several attended John Robinson circus in Fairfield and Washington. Howard Woodford shipped cattle to the Chicago market. Delta Sunday entertainment and visitors noted.
The August 1 crop report shows Iowa leading U S corn output with an indicated 277.4 million bushels, down 55.5 million from July due to heat and drought. Illinois trails by more than 100 million bushels, with Iowa at 73 percent of normal condition and about 34 bushels per acre, while oats reach 90 percent normal and 21.288 million bushels.

In Chicago Chinatown on August 12 police patrolled streets after a tong dispute caused one death. George Moe, alleged Hip Sing Tong deserter, was killed while defending himself from attackers. Christopher Pluff, a Detroit police officer, claimed he could eat more wieners than any fellow officers. In 34 minutes he ate 64 wieners and finished with two Spanish onions and a can of beans. A few days later he was on sick leave.
In Rand Ridge a drunk driving case resulted in a $12 fine against William Hatter. A friend offered to pay by check, which was accepted, but when the payer later tried to honor the check the payment had been stopped.
A speeding car fired on a Sterling officer today, leaving him dead after a pursuit. Investigators tie the case to a vigilante shooting near Tipton and a prior robbery in Davelport town, as suspects flee toward Tipton. In other news, Bowser of Cedar Rapids is held on $5,000 bond for alleged accomplice in a Walford bank robbery. two men charged with a Lamb’s National Bank heist and $3,000 theft in Justice Court.
Trophies for the annual YVMCA tennis tournament arrived today and will be displayed soon. Winners will be honored with caps and embroidered shields, as interest grows for the event at the Y court west of the American Pearl button factory. Registration cards are available at the Colengo hotel or the finals office, and entrants are urged to sign promptly as the tourney opens next week.
