Resurfacing sought for 218 stretch in Washington County
District Highway Engineer Robert Percival plans to ask the DOT Commission in 1978 to resurface the 13.5 mile segment of U S 218 from Highway 92 near Ainsworth to Highway 22 near Riverside. County officials say the move, spurred by public pressure over delays, could transfer 218 to local control after 518 is built.

Observers in Dubuque noted white road cover on a stretch of U S 20 thought to be winter snow. County authorities said salt spilled from a truck or loose tailgate created about one half inch of white substance. Road crews worked to clear the highway as observers commented on the unusual weather-like whiteness.

The body of Dennis Statsny, 30, was pulled from the Cedar River Thursday in Cedar Rapids. Police say he disappeared Tuesday and a knife wound in his chest indicates homicide. Two persons are being sought for questioning.

Benefit Concert Planned for Beverly Hills Fire Victims
Cincinnati UPI reports a Sept 15 benefit concert will feature entertainers who performed at the Beverly Hills Supper Club. Several artists attended the nearby Southgate nightclub the night of the blaze that killed 164, including TV star John Davidson. Music arranger Douglas G Herro, 27, of Los Angeles, also perished in the fire. Davidson was scheduled to perform for about 1,200 in the Cabaret Room the night of the fire.

Ann Schneider of Riverside owned the champion Charolais Angu s Hereford cross weighing 1105 pounds with a 14.8 in ribeye, .3 in backfat, yield 1.7 and low choice grade. Reserve went to Stout's 1220 lb Angus steer with a 15.5 in ribeye, .4 in backfat, yield 2.1. Several exhibitors at the Washington County beef carcass show earned blue and red awards, with a total of 675 in special awards funded by local banks and farm groups.

Third suspect tied to Washington pickup theft arrested
An 18 year old, Terry Hagans of Brighton, was jailed on two larceny charges after a pickup owned by Bob Roe was stolen from Roe’s Heating and Hardware in Washington. Hagans and James Goodlander, both 18, are in Johnson County Jail on 2000 bond each. A 16 year old from Washington was released to juvenile authorities. The stolen truck fled at high speed on Highway 218 before crashing near Oxford.
