A weekend tragedy report notes eleven Iowans killed in various accidents including a girl struck by a car in Le Mars. Siena Mueller ten of Alton is named among the injured as details of the day’s incidents unfold.
Weekday showers cut opening crowds at the All Iowa fair in Davenport at Hawkeye Downe Ground and auto races were postponed. The night show proceeded on schedule. A Sunday preview aired in the WMT booth as $20,000 worth of equipment was displayed and televised programs were filmed for the grounds.
Davenport police searched for a car that clipped 18 year old Jack Roenfeldt but found nothing near the scene. A doctor confirmed the car could be grafted. Four people were injured when Warren Berkenbile attempted another move causing his car to skid and crash into two others. Roenfeldt was in Berkenbile's car. others injured were Mr and Mrs Buffalo with severe cuts and Berkenbile with head cuts.
Sioux Rapids reports Ole Johnson oldest living Iowa man celebrated his 105th birthday Sunday with 78 descendants gathering at Linn Grove Lutheran Church. Rain kept him home in his chair as six daughters, 25 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild joined in the festivities and gave Grandpa a new pipe and tobacco.
Jack Condon fourteen and his brother William fifteen died from injuries after an auto driven by Joseph Burskens twenty four struck them as the pair rode bicycles toward a creek they planned to fish for frogs. Burskens car overturned. he said he did not see the boys and was released.
Two young aviation enthusiasts were injured when a newly purchased open cockpit plane crashed a mile north of Woden during a homeward flight. Arch ie Hanna of Woden 22 employed by his father in well drilling and Herman Delver 28 a farmer near Wesley were hospitalized at Kossuth County Hospital in Alg on with scalp and crush injuries.
Funeral services for E. F. Neal former county auditor were held at L. A Jones funeral home with Dr. K R C Keagy officiating. The Masonic ritual followed before burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Neal, a member of Washington lodge of Masons, was accompanied by his son Lloyd Neal and A K R Nelson of Des Moines.
Dr. K R C Keagy of the Methodist church urged Union Park attendees to seek spiritual unity among Christian denominations. He cited shared teachings under one God and one faith, and stressed unity from hearts to effect a better community and nation amid war and upheaval. The three week union service featured Municipal Band music with Milo Sorden directing.
Hurricane isolated 100 miles of coastline between Savannah and Charleston causing widespread property damage and homelessness. Paris Island reports extensive property loss but no Marines casualties among 3500 garrison. Tybee Island also reports damage. light and water services crippled in Savannah and Charleston. Red Cross puts homeless at over 400 in Charleston.
Brighton August 12 two rear wheels from a Ralph Tracy pick up truck were removed during the night burglars also broke into the Tracy garage to take hubcaps. The Tracys had guests and the theft likely occurred after midnight. Sheriff Harold Putnam investigated with no report available this morning.
Pilots from across Iowa convened in Fredericksburg for a breakfast meeting hosted by Dr. A. L. Murphey and Carl Mikes, bringing together aviation enthusiasts and local hosts for a morning gathering.
Claude Breidenthal of the Christian church assisted in the service as other ministers are away on vacation.
United Press reports at least eleven Iowans died in accidents Sunday through Monday including nine highway crashes and two plane crashes. Victims include children Leonard Atkinson and Jack Condon and student Winston Hall among others, with multiple fatal bicycle and car collisions across Mason City Dubuque Boone Jesup Tama Council Bluffs and nearby areas.
Eight 4-H boys accompanied by county officials spent Saturday in Ames for stock judging training at the college livestock facilities. The program mirrors state contest judging in horses hogs dairy cattle and beef cattle. Attending club boys from the county included Marion Timmins Raymond Bell Wm Maas Chas Maas Cleo McCoy Paul Martin Deane Rinner and Everett Miller.
Grace Hill ladies present a play titled A Wedding at 8 o clock Friday in the Christian church. A free will offering will be taken and the Home Builders class will sponsor an ice cream social after the play to benefit the church. The public is invited.
Over 330 farm homes in Henry and eastern Jefferson counties will drop oil lamps and hand operated washing machines as new REA line power comes online in coming weeks.
The Journal hosts its annual Three-Quarter Century Club gathering at the Country Club on a rainy Saturday. Nearly a hundred members attended. long tables served chicken and roadies with a short post-dinner program. Speakers praised lifelong interest, with celebrations for couples married 50 to 60 years and birthdays nearing 88 to 96. Transportation was provided by the Chamber of Commerce and Y M C A crews.
Blaine J. Holmes, longtime Washington street commissioner, begins work today as county foreman for the state highway commission. He will oversee repair and maintenance on primary county roads under R A Frink, replacing Ernest Salladay. Holmes previously served as street commissioner and city police official for about eight years. A new street commissioner is expected to be named today, with City Council meeting this afternoon to finalize the selection.
Will Kyle of Washington received a letter from McCall Publications announcing honorable mention and a $10 prize for an expert division photograph. The silhouette shows Lloyd Augustine drinking from a jug in a Washington County harvest field on July 16, titled He Used to Be a Bugler.
Rainfall in the last three days totaled .82 inches with Saturday a half inch and Sunday .12 inches. A sharp shower this morning added .20 inches.
A Moline gathering marked by a long overdue reunion with a 33 year gap. A greeting letter from 93 year old W Allen Stewart was read since he could not attend. The message included warm sentiments and support for Wendell Willkie.
London papers described one of the era’s largest air battles as German planes swarmed British coastlines. German losses were tallied at about 20 by late afternoon, with total German planes lost since June 18 exceeding 400. Berlin claimed 71 British fighters down in raids on Portsmouth Manston and other targets, with 17 missing after three large operations and heavy damage at naval bases and airports.
Phil Nelson won the plate accordion section at the Mississippi Valley Music Festival in East Moline Illinois with 137 of 140 points. He advances to represent the state at the Chicago Land Music Festival August 17–18 at Soldiers Field. Nelson was accompanied by instructor John Yousling and his parents, with James Melton in attendance.
Two men charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated appeared in district court before Judge J G Patterson. Lewis B Payne of Rock Island was fined 2300 with 260 paid and the rest suspended on good behavior. Wisle Long was fined 300 with 100 paid and the rest suspended on good behavior. Both were represented by attorneys and Night Officer Walt Kiesey made the arrest.
