Frank Hacker, 63, Bloomfield farmer, was in St. Joseph hospital with a fractured back after a hay load trapped him between the load and the barn on his farm.
Victor Russell 23 and his brother Henry 28 suffered severe burns in Jackson Minnesota after a blow torch exploded. They were hospitalized and apparently recovering according to reports from the scene.
A heat triggered sulphur dioxide gas explosion at the D. K. Baxter Co plant set off a general fire alarm in Sioux City. Only the Baxter awning and Leslie Peters' automobile were damaged by the shower of tin.
James Moran was sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to selling marijuana on three occasions last May. The charges were brought before District Judge O S Franklin based on an indictment. An informer cooperating with Federal Narcotic Agent W D Morris and State Agent W J Fogarty testified.
Theodore Risse an 18 year old Grinnell High School senior died in Grinnell after a truck load of hay was swept by overhanging wires causing a broken back and fractured skull.
LAKE PARK The city council banned ice cream socials on Main Street after merchants complained sales declined during the events. The council also asked the high school band to perform on the lawn rather than on Main Street to reduce crowding. Merchants said concerts caused uneven trading patterns.
Five children ages 3 to 13 of Mr and Mrs Robert Majors near Boone are in an isolated ward with moderate typhoid fever. Health authorities trace infection to an undetermined carrier and say cases are localized. Inoculations have been given to other family members.
Edyth Fountain 18 of Daytonville pleaded guilty to forgery and was sentenced to six months at the Rockwell City reformatory but the judge suspended the sentence due to good behavior and pregnancy, paroling her to Sheriff Putnam. County and defense attorneys assisted as the state pursued the case.

Charles J. Feldman prominent Henry county farmer was missing since Monday. A sheriff posse of 2300 men searched Wayland Ottumwa and New London by train and truck before Feldman arrived home late last night.
Captain Alfred Hencke of the transverfin line said the Wer advised crew plans to depart New York at ten o clock tomorrow morning for the return trip to Berlin. Air ministry officials stressed decisions on the flight rest with the crew.
Washington citizens formed a committee to work with the board of education on a two school program. A federal grant of 104,211 dollars will aid the project as two grade schools remain outmoded. Dr. Peterson of the State University of Iowa may be invited to help clarify issues. The meeting date will be announced and the public will be invited to participate.
The Citizens Committee met with the Board of Education to review the school building program. Substantial agreement emerged on immediate need for one new school and overhaul of the elementary system. With a federal grant of 104 211 dollars, the plan could replace the entire system for about the cost of a single school, and Peterson of the state university may be invited to advise.
The Board of Education thanks the Citlwns Committee for its suggestions and confirms appreciation for input on the school-building project. It notes the complexity of the problems and invites further help or ideas from any source. Continued on page 2.
A county health contest honored top 4-H members at a Methodist church assembly closing a large fair. County health winner is 17-year-old Donald Stout of Brighton, and 15-year-old Fae Schoonover of Washington led girls. Runners up include Marion Timmins, Robert Macon, Joan Gerdes, with alternates named. Special awards include livestock medals, a silver county agent plaque to William Walker, and $20 trip prizes to several members.
Governor Kraschel issued an order to lift martial law in Newton after 25 days of Maytag plant closures and reopenings. Two conditions remained before troops withdrew, with Adjutant General Grahl rushing to Newton to secure compliance and end the costs exceeding 15000 dollars. Local counsel Carr questioned readiness and cautioned no word from the governor about removing injunctions or dismissals linked to the strike.
Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home for Joseph Horn who died at 10 30 PM in his home 1025 North Iowa avenue after a heart ailment and complications since May. The service will be at the Methodist church with Rev C E Strong assisting Dr Arthur Atack. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Horn born August 13 1860 in Lexington Kentucky leaves wife Emma Hightshoe died 1920 and second wife Mrs Nettle Cox in Washington. survived by one brother Claude Horn and sister Deborah Purdue and three stepchildren Will Ray Cox and Mrs Charles Godwin. He lived in Washington about 20 years and was a Methodist church member and Bible class participant.
