Dennis Graber, a farmer near Crawfordsville, was pinned briefly Friday when a tractor he was driving overturned while hauling rocks. He crawled free, was taken to an Iowa City hospital with badly bruised lungs and multiple injuries.
Police said vandals who looted a trailer office at the Washington landfill returned the receipt box to the old bus serving as the office on Sunday night. They also damaged the trailer interior and scattered items, and broke locks on dog pound cages at the site. Police Chief Ken Bauer called the act disappointing.
SCAD Summer Creative Arts and Drama presents a photographic display at the Washington Public Library featuring black and white prints and solar photography from participants in SCAD summer workshop. Slide presentations are planned for Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the display is open during regular library hours.
County Extension director Jim Frier says the August 12 meeting to announce results of the 1975 County Fair 4-H and FFA swine carcass class and adult pig derby show is canceled due to multiple carcass shows at the same time. Iowa voters may register by mail ahead of elections under a new state law. Walter Schroeder the county auditor placed notarized registration cards in banks except those in Washington and at the Washington Public Library and Wellman city clerk's office. Cards are available at the auditor's courthouse, with a school election set for September 9 and a 25 day postmark deadline. Each card must be mailed separately with notary sworn affirmation.
The Hoffa disappearance case received a setback as reports said blood in a car was from a frozen fish, not human. FBI sources noted this may shift focus away from the promising lead and influence grand jury action in Detroit. Hoffa, 62, vanished July 9 after a planned meeting at the Machus Red Fox.
Washington Community schools board of education meets Wednesday at 1 30 p m in the administration building West Main Street to review the transportation program dairy and bakery contracts amendments to free and reduced price lunch policy the working budget and election plans for September 9. The agenda includes a report on educational closed circuit TV for the junior high services for private school students and board policies on student personnel The testing program and term objectives will be presented.
Two men died in a Saturday morning car crash near Riverside. Ricky R. Allen 20 of Iowa City died at the scene and Craig A. Smith 2 of Wellman also perished. Frank F. Commings Riverside town marshal survived with minor injuries after his car struck the burning vehicle. The crash left both cars demolished. Ricky Allen funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Wellman with burial in Wassonville Cemetery. Craig Allen Smith funeral rites set for St. Joseph Church Wellman with burial in Wellman Cemetery.
