Rioters clash with Montrose officials during a village council session over Sunday laws. Mayor Craig and three aldermen flee through a window as William Spain is shot in the thigh and seven residents suffer injuries. Warrants issue for Mayor Craig and Marshal Lambert.
A river steamer Jessie of the Columbia Exploration Co foundered in the Kuskokwim river Alaska during a July 28 storm with eighteen aboard. The barge Minerva loaded with supplies was in tow. Indians who found the wrecked barge reported all hands lost and the supplies seized. The incident follows the crew leaving the Lakme earlier and heading upriver.
New York reports the auxiliary cruiser Yale is ordered to sail to Santiago carrying the Eighth Illinois volunteer infantry departing Springfield via the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Newport News Aug 11. Colonel Cyler of the Fifth Illinois regt received orders to disembark and await further orders after the transport Ohbam carried men and provisions. Colonel Culver waits to return to the transport. Virginia capes sent orders to signal Alamo with General Grant and six Kentucky companies, but the ship likely sailed before orders arrived.
Washington reports Third Virginia officers and men object to alleged reports of a hospital steward murdered by a colored man. The crowd, said to include soldiers from Connecticut and other regiments, was claimed to be 800 in camp, but officials insist no serious disturbance occurred.
