A mixed dispatch from multiple cities notes Don Carlos preparing for an uprising in Spain. Other items report Rough Riders arriving in New York, fever among troops, measles cases, and naval movements with shifts in Spanish conditions. Civil and international tensions appear on several fronts with political talks in Washington and military transports to Porto Rico.
Aug 10 Newport News reports General Grant and six companies of the First Kentucky embark for Porto Rico with brigade actions and countermanded orders. In Manila Cavite trenches see eleven killed and forty-four wounded in a night skirmish as Americans hold the top of our earthworks during a storm. Reports describe further naval movements, expect Manila fall after Monadnock arrival and Dewey fleet action.
Krank H. Cheeseman a South Berkeley painter confronted Henry Brooke in Oakland vowing a crime and opened fire killing Brooke in his home. He then shot Misetta Payne in the thigh and wounded Mrs Brooke as the assailant fled but was later captured. Cheeseman had a prior criminal record including a 1892 razor assault in San Francisco.
A band of about fifty tramps halted a Great Northern freight at Grand Forks station. They refused to disembark and fought with the train crew. Authorities, alerted by wire, organized a posse and stopped the train before entering the city, capturing most of the troublemakers and placing them in jail.
Washington Aug 10. General Miles' cable said no reinforcements needed and no more troops to Porto Rico, halting Newport News embarkations and suppressing General Wade’s corps movement. Camps to scatter troops, remove some regiments, and push others on prairie marches to relieve concentration. Wade’s six brigades listed. Fifth Illinois among those possibly held up. Incident at Camp Alger risks dishonorable discharge after a fight involving Third Virginia. General Bettler tightens discipline with stricter passes and four daily roll calls. Meanwhile Tiffany’s regiment linked to Maud Livingston engagement. Evansville Tribune plant purchase ends Tribune publication.
Peking reports Britain will back China if any foreign power threatens it over a British subject led railroad or public works. Curzon told parliament MacDonald confirmed China thanked Britain for support and saw no aggression threats. A North Dakota fire in Bismarck causes estimated losses of 600000 to 750000 with 250000 insured.
Senator Hanna and H H Kohlsaat left Duluth for Yellowstone park. Hanna said the silver issue is dead and no international bimetallism agreement is likely this year. He noted state conventions backing straight gold platforms align with Republican notions of strong money and war policies.
