Fall at the Front Spaniards landings in Manila bay

Aug 10 Newport News reports General Grant and six companies of the First Kentucky embark for Porto Rico with brigade actions and countermanded orders. In Manila Cavite trenches see eleven killed and forty-four wounded in a night skirmish as Americans hold the top of our earthworks during a storm. Reports describe further naval movements, expect Manila fall after Monadnock arrival and Dewey fleet action.

Cheeseman Kills Man Then Shoots Woman in Oakland

Krank H. Cheeseman a South Berkeley painter confronted Henry Brooke in Oakland vowing a crime and opened fire killing Brooke in his home. He then shot Misetta Payne in the thigh and wounded Mrs Brooke as the assailant fled but was later captured. Cheeseman had a prior criminal record including a 1892 razor assault in San Francisco.

Tramps disrupt Great Northern freight near Grand Forks

A band of about fifty tramps halted a Great Northern freight at Grand Forks station. They refused to disembark and fought with the train crew. Authorities, alerted by wire, organized a posse and stopped the train before entering the city, capturing most of the troublemakers and placing them in jail.
