Iowa Supreme Court may redraw districts itself

Iowa Chief Justice Edwin Moore said the Iowa Supreme Court may seize reapportionment powers if the 1971 legislative redistricting plan is ruled unconstitutional. Three lawsuits challenge the plan adopted to align districts with the 1970 census. The court will meet on Labor Day to decide whether to gather evidence or redraw the maps.

Postal third class rate hike goes into effect

The U S Postal Service will temporarily roll the full planned five year third class rate increase into effect September 16, staying until 30 days after the Postal Rate Commission acts. The move aims to raise about 13 million dollars monthly. the Direct Mail Advertising Association vows to sue to block the change pending commission approval.

Van Nostrand to act Will probe utility rates

Iowa Commerce Commission chairman Maureie Van Nostrand announced a full scale investigation into electric gas telephone and water rates after staff found wide disparities and profits above accepted levels. The study urged rate cuts or new facilities to improve service, naming several electric water and telephone firms as exceeding proposed profit benchmarks.

French Charolais cattle arrive at Wellman farm

An import of pure French Charolais cattle arrived at the Howard Greiner farm in Wellman Iowa. The group includes three bulls and one heifer that had been on the road since December passing through North Ireland. They come from the Greiner and Dodd herd in Chester England.

Fifth great great grandchild arrives as Grandma Redlinger grows clan

Catherine Redlinger 91, matriarch of a sprawling brood, has welcomed her 55th great grandchild and fifth great great grandchild in recent weeks. Her son Ray, Earl, Alphonsa, Bea, Hubert and Matt leaves a large trail of descendants totaling twenty grandchildren and eighty great grandchildren across families including the Schiebels and Andersons. She lives at 523 North Iowa in a 14 room house still bustling every Sunday and at Christmas after midnight mass.
