American helicopter strafes Vietnamese village named for Nolting
A US helicopter accidentally strafed a strategic hamlet 200 miles north of Saigon, killing a child and wounding four. The hamlet Don Tin had just been named for outgoing Ambassador Frederick Nolting Jr. The naming, planned before the incident, drew embarrassment as villagers showed cool reception and fears it would invite guerrilla attack. The helicopter was reportedly delivering supplies and the ambassador’s party did not know of the strike. The United States backed South Vietnam in its war against the Viet Cong.

Bull from Grundy County rodeo vanishes in cornfield
A traveling rodeo finished a two day exhibition at the Grundy County Fair and left town without its prize Brahma bull. The $3,500 animal escaped during a practice and disappeared into an adjoining cornfield. Farmer George Sharp and local sponsors searched without success. The rodeo left the field to avoid damaging the corn or risking capture. Sharp plans to watch for the bull and inform the rodeo when it reappears.
