Washington County's 4H and FFA fair wraps with the final horse show session at 2 PM and a concluding evening program. Today featured livestock sales, demonstrations, and a large parade of champions with the Washington Municipal Band concert. Two Die in Granite City Coffee Factory Blast
Rescuers found bodies of Victor Frisse and Shelby Dotson beneath steel and rubble after a blast at a Nestle Co coffee factory in Granite City Illinois. Six others were injured as cranes and bulldozers removed debris in heavy rain.

District Welding Competition Held By FFA At Fair
Ron Fsm oil of Muscatine won first in the Southeast District FFA welding contest held at the Washington County fairgrounds. Bloomfield FFA won top team honors with Washington placing second and Keosauqua third. Multiple schools competed, with judges from Iowa State University and industry firms. The event featured numerous welded projects and prizes donated by local firms and utilities. In a separate note, Mrs. Frieda Varney caught a 14 pound channel catfish at Lake Darling, measuring 32 inches.

Plane crash in Norway kills English schoolboys
Wreckage of a Viking charter carrying 34 English boys aged 12 to 14 to a Lafrane School holiday in Croydon was found southeast of Stavanger with no survivors. Crawford to End Stay at Youth Leadership Camp
Karen Crawford 18 Wellman will return Saturday Aug 12 from a two week leadership camp at Camp Miniwanca near Shelby Michigan. 1800 young women from the United States Canada and other countries attended representing 411 and other youth groups.
