A column notes the first sleeping sickness case in Iowa since June, reported from Harlan. Marvin Ferry, 26, died after four days of illness. The health department explains the disease acts quickly with fever and headache, then vomiting and coma.
Waterloo report states more serious methods will be used to curb auto crashes in Black Hawk County. Sheriff H. T. Wagner says those responsible for injuries will face arrest.
Senator Dickinson of Iowa leveled five charges at President Roosevelt during a Veterans of Foreign Wars event. He criticized the New Deal and its agricultural program while framing the campaign in three words Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Three fine horses owned by rodeo performers in Fremont County died after eating poison bran used to bait grasshoppers near the rodeo grounds. One horse valued at 1500 dollars belonged to Chester Rogers and worked his roping act. The other two jump ing horses belonged to Louis Tindall tricker, one bought for 2000 dollars.
Creston reports plant boiler failure at the Swift Co. plant. Manager L. V. Goiss arranged a Burlington locomotive to the rear siding and connected it to stalled pipes to supply steam.
A Wes Moines contractor driving from Omaha heard a crash ahead and nearly exited his vehicle but reentered after removing his pants to stay cool. The incident involved two cars and occurred on a quiet night in Des Moines.
Six of eight Webster City nurses fell ill with food poisoning forcing relief from Fort Dodge. Fort Dodge nurses will assist in the heart and lung clinic conducted by the Iowa Tuberculosis Association.
Xylophone specialist Pierce Knox broadcasting from WHO Friday night returns as a feature at the Kalona homecoming. The Washington Municipal Band presents two concerts, Saturday and Sunday, with Knox performing Yankee Rhythm and Lullaby of Broadway on Saturday and Simplicity and Alexander's Ragtime Band on Sunday. He will use a new xylophone model.
After 15 years Mr and Mrs James Richards and their sons arrived from Ohio Friday to visit relatives at the William James and J S James home in England. The surprise reunion was joyful and the Richards left Sunday morning.
The New York strike of WPA project workers gains recruits and threatens the four billion dollar program. AFL predicts New York projects employing over 100000 could be tied up Monday as union leaders push for wage scales across New Jersey Ohio Iowa Chicago Massachusetts Washington and Pennsylvania.
The Muskingum River rose steadily at Zanesville Ohio flooding streets highways and railroads and nearly inundating houses in one city section as shown above.
Troop F, 113th Cavalry trains for Camp Dodge at 12 30 tonight and will be in camp for two weeks. Expected strength 45 to 50 men as some carry jobs they do not want to leave. First Lieut Walter G Conner commands in place of Capt Jay Brown who was ordered to camp Thursday to prep for National Guard arrivals.

Four Sigourney men traveled to Washington to confer with I Rothschild County chairman of the Iowa Short Line association about an August 13 picnic and meeting in Sigourney. The event will feature concerts by the Sigourney Municipal band and talks by Don Berry T J Bray and Frank Beatty.
The Minnesota Bible University Choral Club rated highly by critics will present a concert at Washington Christian Church next Tuesday evening August 13. The program includes sacred and secular pieces and authentic negro spirituals. No admission charge, but offerings will be received. all are invited.
Federal crop estimates released by Leslie M. Carl show Iowa will harvest about 364,232,000 bushels, nearly double 1934 and 17 percent above the July 1 forecast. Statewide average production is about 3.5 bushels per acre, versus a five year average of 438,792,000 bushels.
I Rothschild will address the Davenport Rotary club next Monday on The Jews' Contribution to Civilization. The talk promises discussion on Jewish influence and cultural heritage.
A dynamite blast along the Illinois Central main line near Springfield tossed a locomotive and ten freight cars off track. Two crew members were bruised, engineer unharmed, and the line between Chicago and St Louis was halted. The attack marks the fifteenth mine war bombing in Illinois amid a three year, 36 life toll dispute.
LL Dogers praises Alaska's government noting 16 congressmen and eight senators all Democrats and calls the system near ideal. He plans a trip to Skagway to cross the Chilkoot pass, claiming 19 minutes versus pioneers' months.
Washington reports the Works Progress and Malibu program approved higher wages for Iowa labor. Unskilled workers receive $8 more per month, while professional staff gain $15, as officials say the change was planned for six weeks and not driven by protests.

W. W. Morrison has returned from a visit with Kansas City relatives including his brother E. H. Morrison. He also visited his son John Morrison at Columbus Junction. He left here Aug. 1.

The baby beeves auction near the Fecluse Lumber building concluded the event, with 41 head averaging 10 to 12 cents per pound. Awards included gold and silver medals, graduation certificates, and two essays on The Typical 4 H Boy and The Typical 4 H Girl.
Chief John R. Hattery leads a new Iowa highway patrol unit from southeastern counties. He says arrests will occur when needed but emphasizes public cooperation to reduce incidents. After a week on duty, patrolmen report lessons learned and pride in its military style uniforms and new equipment.
Reports indicate severe winds last night in Rubio Richland Pleasant Plain and Brighton blowing down trees unroofing barns and damaging farm buildings. Power and telephone lines were down for over three hours with no serious injuries reported and Iowa Southern Utilities restoring service by noon.
A August 10 report describes a cyclone affecting Rubin and Richland areas. A Clover Leppert farm hay barn was unroofed two miles south of Rubio with trees down and lines broken. Roofs blew from a Richland house and a hay barracks collapsed at Carl Kauffman’s farm. Frank Sylvester’s home north of Rich saw roof loss and Blakely windows broken. Brighton noted a “young” cyclone between Pleasant Plain and Vee southwest of town with streets blocked and debris flying past windows.
Washington experienced 1.45 inches of rain last night per the official weather observer. The storm was among the summer’s heaviest, causing sewer overflow and basement flooding but not as severe as prior downpours.
Mrs J K Yoder, 77, died yesterday evening at 6 15 at home north of Wellman. Funeral from the Union church at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. She was survived by several children.
Flo Paul, 30, of Wellman area, suffered extensive burns when a pot of tea spilled on his lap at dinner. He is hospitalized and expected to recover within days. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alb Paul.
