Iowa reports 1965 fish kills exceed six hundred thousand

DES MOINES UPI The Iowa Conservation Commission reports more than 600000 fish were killed by water pollution in 1965. Harry Harrison says the total came from seven kills, with the Coralville Reservoir under ice taking the largest loss estimated at 400000 fish weighing about 500000 pounds. Five Iowa kills so far this year total 48250. Pollution largely stems from farming and agricultural industry wastes. Spills of nitrogen fertilizer and insecticides have contributed to past losses. Residents should report fish kills to local officers or the state Conservation Commission in Des Moines.
