Bryle C. Runyan five son of Mr and Mrs Lyle Runyan Guthrie Center was killed when he ran into a city street road maintainer being backed uphill by James Porter. Porter said the boy appeared in the path before he could stop.
Cedar Rapids city council orders a topographical survey of 500 acres near the city for a proposed municipal airport. A Chamber of Commerce delegation led by Harold Rowe urges alignment with WHA airport applications under federal civil aviation authority. Location of the site not disclosed.
E D Noller of Wapello County sues John W Strain for 555 dollars alleging he bought 110 dollars worth of hogs that turned out to be cholera sickened by two deaths within 48 hours. Noller spent 50 dollars vaccinating 1127 hogs and sold 93 animals at a loss.
Mrs Mary Braniff, 61, died of a heart attack after hearing a radio report that her estranged husband Frank Braniff 61 was held for the murder of his brother Patrick 77 on a Rockwell City farm. Before dying she told her sister she could not stand the news.
Ben V. Gretman of Garner told 50 soil conservation committee members and clerks from 10 north Iowa counties that corn resealing would start immediately. Farmers were urged to reseal as much corn as possible and not turn any over to the Commodity Credit Corp until the 1946 crop size is known.
Funeral services were held for James Felton, 6, Sioux City's first infantile paralysis fatality in three years. He died after a brief illness in a local hospital. Health director Dr. W S Petty warned that cases were approaching disturbing proportions and urged protective measures for parents.
Nola Janet Hughes aged 18 months from Shambaugh dies following a glioma in the retina of her eye. Her parents Mr and Mrs M L Hughes consented to an eye-removal operation on March 29, 1939, to halt the tumor but the child did not recover.
Nearly 6,000 people packed Crawford County town to view day two of the Westside society horse show heading 110 horses in 26 classes of riding and driving. Fans without reserve tickets were turned away while others toured stables or enjoyed a street carnival and dance.

The talk centers on The Unity of the Spirit and marks the seventh summer gathering with three more planned. K. F. Neal aged 76 who served Washington county as auditor from 1903 to 1906 died yesterday at the Masonic home in Bettersdort near Davenport. The body will be brought to Washington for burial in Elm Grove cemetery with services Saturday at 2 30 pm at L A Jones funeral home. Howard McBride master of the Washington lodge of Masons urges members to assemble at the Masonic temple Saturday at 1 30 pm for preparation.
Frank Yocum, 75, farmer six miles northwest of Columbus Junction, died at 8 15 this morning after a short illness. He was born February 25, 1865, and is survived by his wife Clara Warnstaff and several children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services are planned at Swank church Sunday with interment in Swank cemetery. Cuthomp Funeral Home is handling arrangements. William Cuthomp died recently. funeral set for Saturday at Columbus City Methodist church with burial in Columbus City cemetery.
The obituary notes Mr. Neal, a member of the Washington lodge, died after a life spent in the area. Survived by his son Lloyd of Des Moines and identified as a half brother of Mrs. Charles Hays. Born December 8, 1863, he entered the Masonic home in May 1933.
British forces withdraw 2000 to 3000 troops from Shanghai, Nanking and Tientsin at Japan's request, signaling a shift in Far East influence. The move loosens foreign guard posts in China as Tokyo pushes for greater control in the region. A Japanese air raid on Chungking kills about 1000 civilians.

Hyde Park, August 9. President Roosevelt announced Henry A. Wallace will accept the Democratic vice presidential nomination at Des Moines on August 29. The plan aligns with the party’s notification and acceptance sequence while Willkie and McNary set their nominations for August 17 and 27.

Postmaster M C DeLong announces federal registration for aliens in Washington county under a defense law. Registration opens at the Washington post office starting August 27, with forms available about ten days prior. Foreign-born residents not yet naturalized must register, complete forms, and be fingerprinted at the post office.
President Roosevelt ordered John Cudahy the American ambassador to Belgium to return to the United States immediately for consultation. The State Department announced the move after a public rebuke by Secretary Sumner Welles for Cudahy viewpoints in a London interview. Welles said the views did not represent the U.S. government and violated standing instructions.
The agricultural department estimated the 1940 corn crop at 2,248,246,000 bushels, down from the July forecast of 2,415,998,000. The 1939 crop was 2,619,137,000 bushels. A month earlier the forecast assumed 28 bushels per acre, but dry weather cut the July projection to 26 bushels.
The Harris family of near Washington Center Adair County rejoiced after June 4th was passed. Arthadell Harris cut two something as part of the day's events.
Governor George A Wilson announced Iowa will reduce the general state property tax from two mills to one for taxes payable in 1941. A state treasury balance of $9,508,034 on June 30 1940 enabled the cut, with about $3 million needed next year from general property taxes. The two mill levy had brought in about $6 million annually for state operations totaling around $21 million. The treasury on June 30 showed a gross balance of $15,757,809 with $4,411,842 unexpended appropriations and $1,837,981 in checks issued but not cashed, leaving the net balance of $9,508,034. Governor Wilson noted possible urgent money needs before the next legislature.
Woodrow Waggoner was hurt yesterday evening when the car he rode in veered into a ditch near West Chester. He suffered a fractured left knee cap and a cut on his right arm, and was taken to the county hospital. The vehicle, owned by Richard Miller and driven by Delmar Miller, overturned after failing to negotiate a turn. Delmar was uninjured.

Florence Arizona August 9 Robert Burgunder a 22 year old student was executed in the state prison gas chamber for the murder of Jack Peterson a Phoenix automobile salesman. He wore white shorts no socks and black oxfords as he was led from the death cell to the chamber.
