City workers began repairs after Perdock Motors reported a small street hole Thursday evening. Inspectors found a broken sewer tile and significant subsidence beneath the street, with earth washed away before the issue was detected.
Washington firemen answered an alarm Thursday evening after a fire was found in a trash container in the alley behind Fareway Grocery Store. Little damage occurred before firefighters put out the flames.
The Youth Employment Service will stay open through August 22 to help youth find summer work before school starts. Youth seeking part time work for the school year should apply at the YES Office in the Chamber of Commerce Building. Employers can call YES at 53-3272 with job offers.
Sigourney Iowa Keokuk County officials report no emergency ambulance service since August 1 when three area funeral homes stopped. Board seeks eight to ten volunteers to drive ambulances and accuses Keokuk County Hospital of reneging on an agreement to operate the county bought ambulance.
A dynamite blast at the Denver federal courthouse destroyed the north entrance and shattered windows in surrounding buildings. No injuries were reported. FBI assistant special agent Simon Tuillai described a three-foot crater and debris in the basement parking area, noting damage to a sprinkler head but declining to speculate on the perpetrator.
An early morning 5.0 earthquake rattled Oroville Ca felt 75 miles away in Sacramento. Seismologists link it as aftershock to last Friday 6.0 quake with more aftershocks reported by USGS and UC Berkeley. Federal spokesman notes continued high activity puzzling responders. In New York City the First National City Bank raises its prime rate to 7 percent as inflation fears persist.
Des Moines Iowa Attorney General Richard Turner ruled the social gambling law bars entry or cover charges at private clubs and establishments. Sen. Earl Willits predicts a court challenge by affected groups and notes the decision may reopen legal battles over casino-style gambling in January. The act caps 24 hour winnings to 50 dollars and requires permits for taverns permitting social gambling.
Eugene Martin, a retired farmer from 212 S 4th, turned to woodwork to stay busy. He crafts candlesticks from old porch posts and other reclaimed wood, sometimes giving pieces to his children and displaying two at the Washington County Fair. His wife, who nudged him into the hobby, notes his lifelong hands on approach and says retirement is a challenge he meets with creative reuse.
Area peace officers investigated break ins and vandalism in Washington Kalona and Richmond. Ruby Miller of the Wayside Inn reported burglars entered overnight stealing loose change and damaging a safe. A thief escaped from Richmond Tavern after Te Bockhurst awoke to the attempt. Police also investigated a Coffee Car break in, theft of cigarettes candy bars ice cream and vandalism at the Washington pool and city landfill. A calculator went missing at the pool.
Community College will offer a non credit course in study techniques on Monday August 18 at the Washington city library. The one day session runs from 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. with a lunch break and costs tuition per person. Connie Hoffman from Indiana University will teach the class. For questions call 653 6593. Kirkwood annually offers similar courses before the school year.

Washington reports that the House intelligence committee pushed a highly sensitive area of its inquiry into alleged eavesdropping on overseas calls by Americans into a closed session. NSA chief declined public testimony, citing privacy and security.
Detroit area reports of renewed hope on James R. Hoffa’s fate surface as his son James P. Hoffa and sister Barbara Crancer acknowledge rumors of his return. FBI involvement continues with no official confirmation while Hoffa’s camp builds support and counters pension fund money claims amid speculation of a leadership battle in the Teamsters union.
Thousands of riders began their cross state journey early this morning, pausing at Washington before moving toward Mt Pleasant for the day’s leg of the RAGBRAI ride. Police reported no major incidents as the group continued south to Wayland and on to Mt Pleasant.
