President Nixon told Vice President Ford he would resign, with Kissinger receiving the letter and Ford to be sworn in as 38th president Friday. A 9 p.m. nationwide address was planned, while lawmakers, crowds, and markets responded to the unfolding resignation.
Rain of 0.25 inch fell by 7 am with light showers lingering this morning. The county fair grounds hosted the annual auction and events, while the second FFA Watermelon Feed is set for Marr Park August 10 at 7 pm. Washington High Jazz Band performs tonight at 8 pm for a 30 minute concert.
The Washington YMCA sponsors a boys summer residence camp at Camp Arrowhead near Ottumwa from August 11 to 17. Cost is 36 dollars, for ages 8 to 14. Transportation is provided by the Iowa National Guard. Boys meet at the Y building at 9 45 a m Sunday with a sack lunch and camp gear. Contact Jack Mathews at the YMCA for details.
A Sioux County group launched a letter writing campaign urging Vice President Ford to consider Senator Mark Hatfield of Oregon as his vice president if Ford ascends to the presidency. The effort reflects regional support for Hatfield among Ford supporters.
One contestant, Joe White of rural Ainsworth, cooked a near complete meal on his grill for the Washington County Cookout King Contest. He prepared beef sirloin roast, a homemade frozen apple pie, a buttered potato onion dish, roasting ears, and cabbage salad, wearing a coordinated outfit. He advances to the state final August 21 at the Iowa State Fair in the beef division.
Denison residents including seven ministers and 18 laymen circulate petitions opposing Maharishi International University buying the former Midwestern College campus. They brand the meditation teachings as conflicting with Christian gospel and accuse the school of promoting satanic worship and self worship. Pastor George Brechiesen calls the training techniques tied to satanic worship.
Showers and thunderstorms southeast today with partly cloudy skies and scattered showers in the north and west. Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Showers and storms develop west tonight and spread across most of the state Friday. Lows tonight in the 60s. Cooler on Friday with highs mid 70s in the northwest to low 80s in the southeast.
Alvin Coblentz of Kalona sold the grand champion lamb for a record $2.55 a pound, totaling $293.25 on an 115 pound animal, as Washington County 4 H and FFA Fair posted an $85,417 market livestock sale. Dennis Lampe’s beef topped at $86 cwt, with 1 095 pounds bringing $941.70. The reserve lamb and other sales netted $733.65 for Deanna Bohr and $186 for Warren Temple, while 251 animals sold overall including 98 lambs and 153 beeves. The four day fair neared its close as weather allowed outdoor events to proceed and Governor Ray visited with supporters.
Sen. Edward Brooke introduces a Congressional resolution urging the President receive immunity from prosecution if he resigns to avoid a lengthy impeachment trial. The measure has limited force and depends on Watergate prosecutor Jaworski’s decisions. Brooke cites support from several senators and reiterates his belief that the public deserves full disclosure.
Vice President Gerald R. Ford to be sworn in at 6 p.m. Friday in a White House ceremony. Nixon has reportedly planned to resign and Ford canceled a western trip to stay in Washington. Ford will meet with Kissinger and has indicated he will try to keep Kissinger in the cabinet.
NCGA President John W. Curry announces an Aug 1 forecast of 5.04 billion bushels, down 478 million from July, with average yield 74.6 bushels per acre across 67.6 million harvested acres. He cites July drought in the southwestern Corn Belt and notes state drops including Iowa Nebraska Illinois and Minnesota. The crop still ranks as the fourth largest since the Civil War.
The Labor Department reports a 3.9 percent July increase in the wholesale price index to 161.7, up 20.4 percent from a year ago. Higher costs for livestock, meats, grains, gasoline, fuels, and new autos drive the broad rise with nondurables leading and dairy the sole decline.
