President Kennedy signed a new farm bill at a White House ceremony to cut grain surpluses and lift farm income. It requires a 10 percent wheat planting reduction next year in exchange for payments based on 45 percent of normal yield, with durum wheat exempted.
The Rev Richard A Peterson will become pastor of the Washington Baptist Church on August 16, succeeding the Rev S J Curry who resigns to pursue further schooling in Winston Salem NC. Peterson, married with two children ages 7 and 5, is a 1953 B S and Commerce graduate from the State University of Iowa and earned a 1959 Bachelor of Divinity from Central Baptist Theological Seminary Kansas City Kansas. He has pastored Cherokee Church since then and served in the U S Army two years prior to his Kansas City studies. He has been active in YMCA work as a swimming instructor and was a Dolphin Swimming Fraternity member at Iowa. He currently moderates the Sioux Valley Baptist Association.
The county cancer crusade raised 5491.08, slightly under the $5500 goal, up 450 from last year. Volunteers in townships and towns tabulated results. contributions can still be sent to the County Superintendent of Schools. Women of the Moose led by Mrs. Grubb oversaw Washington city drive with 2208.77 from township fund and 3282.39 from county towns and cities.
Earl T Simerman 70 of 120 East Seventh Street died at 4 10 a m today at Veterans Hospital Iowa City after six years of poor health. He owned Sim's Grocery in Washington and organized Iowa National Guard cavalry unit Troop D. He served in World War I with Co K 168th Infantry 42nd Division. Funeral Thursday 11 a m at Jones Funeral Home with VFW military rites. He is survived by his wife Maude Miller and one brother Wayne.
Washington's Municipal Band will present three vocal selections as part of this week's concert under director Robert Steele at 7 pm on Wednesday at the Washington County fair grounds. The program features God Bless America King Cotton Princess of India LT Want a Girl Susanna Shuffle Tell Me Your Dream Old New York My Wild Irish Rose Broadcaster Frere Jaques North Iowa Band Festival Bill Bailey and other popular selections.
Two persons were killed when their car crashed into the rear of a truck on Iowa 92 about one mile west of Oskaloosa. Victims were Gerald Joe Vaughn DeJong 37 of Pella and Elizabeth Brause 22 of Knoxville. Norman Duane Vander Zyl 21 of Oskaloosa was injured. truck driver was Gerald Fenton of Oskaloosa.
Washington County fair grounds hosted judging of junior class home furnishing exhibits by 44 girls. 4H judging continues today with a judging contest and demonstration competition set to begin Wednesday. Results list numerous named participants across groups such as Busy Bees, Cloverleaf, Starliners, and Hi Ores.
Rosann Crayne of Washington wins both champion individual market hog and champion pen of three market hogs at the Washington County Fair. A last minute substitution after a pig died in a field due to lightning still yields the double victory. Ron LeFever and Bill Frame take reserve honors in the pen and individual categories.

Park board candidates include Jay Brewer and Hugo Lensch. council at large is William Tweeten. fourth ward Dale Fuhr. second ward JW Fields. Carryover councilmembers are Ray Minick Ralph Marshall and Tom Tanner. park board member Ralph Bauer also remains.
Washington County 4 H and FRA fair features livestock and home furnishings judging today with baby beefs purebred heifers and colts on the slate. Jaycee beauty contest and tractor pulling at 2 pm municipal band at 7 pm parade of champions at 8 pm and farm fire demos at 8 45 pm highlight the evening.
