Opening day of the Washington county 4-H club achievement show saw large complete displays despite rain. Judging begins today in both boys and girls divisions. Livestock exhibits were set at the Eclipse Lumber Yard with baby beeves pigs and lambs ready for judging. Included were 17 Herefords six Angus and one Shorthorn noted as excellent quality. Baseball games planned for this afternoon at Blaitner field were called off due to waterlogged conditions and rescheduled for Wednesday at the same venue and time. At 2 15 the Washington Independents face an old time pall players, followed by Washington versus Muscatine junior Legion.
At a recent council meeting, Washington approved a city tax levy of 38175 for next year and instructed the city clerk to file the budget with the county auditor. No objections were raised after the hearing. The session also approved a cigarette license for Morgan cafe and granted permission to discharge bombs and flares for the Centennial celebration. The salary of Surveyor P. L. Jordan was raised by ten dollars per month, and the council adjourned early to attend the Centennial memorial fountain dedication in Central Park.
A grand dedication last night unveiled an illuminated fountain in Central Park, a Washington centennial highlight that drew thousands despite rain. Judge Charles A. Dewey delivered the dedicatory address as lights blossomed and water flowed, drawing enthusiastic cheers from a crowd that filled the park and surrounding streets.
City park board chair J. E. Lemmon and Fountain Fund chair Mrs. Rose Reid report totals of 105.55 toward the centennial fountain. Top donor Ralph M. Smith handed a 26.00 check. other gifts include 40.62 from Catholic women, 20.50 from court house staff, and 10.73 from the Whisker club band, with many smaller gifts listed from local residents and officials.
Weather notes record 1.10 inches of rainfall with totals rising to 3.10 inches since yesterday evening. A late afternoon high around 9 degrees and a low near 86 degrees are reported, with rain aiding crops but dampening plans for the Washington Centennial celebration.
Firemen respond to a blaze started by an oil stove. The stove was moved into the yard and no one was injured nor property damaged.
Egniger and Larry Sowden noted as supervisors with J L Jordan in charge of construction duties. The two leaders coordinate on site tasks and project oversight alongside the superintendent.
Judge Charles A. Dewey opened his speech before a large Washington crowd with a broad smile as he dedicated the fountain, greeting attendees and offering thanks for the project.
Rain failed to dampen Washington celebration as residents moved forward with the town centennial pageant schedule. Parades shifted times, but events run Thursday with a full parade and 4H livestock entries, plans adjusted for weather. Bombs signaled the opening of the festivities despite showers.
Mr and Mrs Carl Favinger and daughter Jean returned to their Ainsworth Nebraska home after a Thursday visit with Mr Pligabeth Sehulty and a Friday cooperative dinner at Don Smith's home. Other guests included Mya Sehulty the Leslie Dumlap Don Applegate I B worth and Clair Neff families.
