Temperature soars to 105 as 4-H entries multiply across stock, dairy, and lamb divisions. Herefords 21, Angus 25, Shorthorns 138 share baby beef display. 56 Shropshire lambs. 12 litters of market pigs and 17 purebreds total over 190 pigs. Judging by Ames faculty begins with dairy heifers. schedules set for Thursday.
The 4-H Creed highlights practical hands on learning linking knowledge to action. It describes boys and girls showing real farm and home skills at the county fair with plans pride and long hours of effort by the whole community.
A party of Washington businessmen visited the 4-H club livestock show yesterday and were impressed by the calves pigs and sheep while learning little about breeds. They urged every local resident to attend to see how county youth are developing livestock and to grow attendance for the biggest show yet.
About 200 garments are on display in the social hall as 145 club girls of Washington county exhibit their clothing work. Twelve clubs have held 117 meetings since last September. Tomorrow afternoon at 2 a style show will open with Tailored Dresses then Dainty Dresses with a state fair winner chosen to advance. Esther Pond of Iowa State College will judge and select the overall winner.
All Washington stores will close Friday at 11 oclock and stay shut during the 4 H club parade. The event is expected to last about an hour and many merchants will miss at least that time. Some shops may reopen from twelve to one for a basket dinner at Sunset Park.
Two British flyers Leonard Reid and J. R. Ayling launched from Wasaga Beach Ontario aiming to set a world long distance non stop record. They plan a 5000 mile flight to Bagdad in a 600 gallon fuel load hoping for about 65 hours flight time. Weather across eastern Canada and the north Atlantic is favorable.
Davenport police arrested Margaret Aller after a warrant issued by Justice J E Bovee linked her to larceny from the John Keelan home in Kalona. Aller was held in Davenport jail and to be brought to Washington to face the charge.
Hogs advanced to the highest price level since last October on the Chicago market today. Market observers noted strong demand and steady supplies as prices climbed for the month.
About 45 American Legion men attended a chicken supper at Sunset park pavilion. Organizers Aaron Stafford Carl Voorhees Howard Miller and Dale Atkinson led the event as plans were made to appoint state convention delegates by Commander A F E Baldrige once information is secured. The supper is an annual pre convention event.
Miss Alice Crawford died at the county home after a year as an invalid. Funeral services will be held at ten o'clock Thursday morning at L. A. Jones in charge by Dr. F. C. Witzigman of the neral home for a Methodist ceremony. Burial at Kalona cemetery. Born October 8 1864 in Licking County Ohio, she lived in Iowa most of her life. She leaves three living sisters Mrs Barney Smith Vancouver Washington Mrs S Mapel Washington and Mrs Sarah Steel Akron Iowa. One sister Mrs Emma Baker is deceased.
Wellman announces John Cook will become music director starting September 1, succeeding Milo T. Sorden who departs for Ida Grove. Cook, a Reinbeck teacher with Upper Iowa summer studies, is single and will relocate with the Sorens’ move.
Jacob Roth editor of the Wayland News will be the main speaker at the county wide Sun day school plenie at Sunset park next Tuesday Aug 4 The county council of religious education announced the event and Roth will address Present Day Problems at 2 PM He has prepared material for some time and guests who heard his prior talks will want to attend A basket dinner is planned at noon as part of the day’s program

The United States civil service commission announces the West Chester postmaster exam to be held in Washington. Applications close August 24. applicants must be US citizens 21 to 64 and reside in the local post office territory. Details and forms available from the postmaster at the vacancy location.
Officials from the University of Iowa and Iowa State College met with the state board of education to draft a plan merging the two school radio stations for mutual benefit. Indications suggest approval after October first, with consolidation discussions ongoing and a future meeting set to address remaining issues.
