Steam hobbyist Nelson Smith builds three mile per hour engine

Nelson Smith of Brighton Iowa, an 18 year old sophomore at ISU Ames, restored and operates a 1913 Case steam engine. He learned from older experts at Mt Pleasant, tests are yearly, and he uses wood for fuel to keep smoke down. Visitors ride the engine on weekends, and the project led to Brighton’s Centennial parade and plans for the Old Thresher’s Reunion. He hopes to own a saw mill someday before college resumes.

Nixon relaxes on Piney Island retreat in Maine weekend

President Nixon relaxed on a secluded island near Penobscot Bay Maine after a swing through New Hampshire where he defended his China trip amid comments from publisher William Loeb. Nixon, his wife Pat and daughter Julie with son in law David Eisenhower spent the weekend in a pink eight bedroom mansion on Piney Island.

Sac and Fox to divide millions in land settlement

Representatives of the Sac and Fox Indians of Iowa Oklahoma and Missouri reached a percentage split for more than 10 million in lands bought between 1837 and 1842. Iowa would get 39 percent Oklahoma 45 and Missouri 15 with about 2 600 per person and a Tama settlement plan. Congress must approve measures to free funds and governance authority making the distribution lengthy.

Panthers mistrial? Jurors find Panthers not guilty in police siege

Jurors in New Orleans return a not guilty verdict after 31 minutes against 12 Black Panthers accused of trying to murder five policemen during the Sept 15 1970 raid. Bohr touts TOT terraces cutting soil erosion on farms

Howard Bohr of Wellman reported to Soil Conservation Service staff that newly built TOT terraces capture a large volume of silt after a heavy rain. The system slows runoff by directing surface water into a tile network, with more farms like those of Harold Bohr, Richard Swailes, Sikke Temple, Keith Horn, and Steve Wiggers planning or installing TOT outlets and surveying sites for future terracing efforts in the Washington County Soil Conservation District.
