An enraged bull charged a Foix Toulouse passenger train near Toulouse France Saturday night, forcing the engine to be rescued. Passengers and crew stayed inside as several dogs appeared and chased the bull away.
Linda McKinstry daughter of Mr and Mrs Elliott McKinstry of Route One Washington serves as local club president and county historian while set to enter West Chester High School as a senior. Wilma Krantz daughter of Mr and Mrs Virgil Krantz of Crawfordsville attends Iowa City Commercial College and works in University Hospitals nutrition. Her five years with 4-H Clover Leaf Club include multiple club roles.
Judge Mrs. Lloyd Reid and Mrs. Clarence Rhodes lead the nutrition exhibit judging in three divisions junior intermediate and senior. By noon most entries were judged with remaining awards set for the senior demonstration team contest this afternoon.
Donald Mitchell formerly of Crawfordsville died Monday morning at his San Pedro home. He was born August 4, 1898, in Crawfordsville and graduated from its high school in 1918. He married Khue Strain in 1920 and moved to California, where he worked as a Harbor Board surveyor in Los Angeles. Survivors include his widow, two daughters Honor Pape and Mrs. Charles Harris, one son Gordon, his mother Minnie Mitchell, a sister Ina McCune, a brother Dale, all of Crawfordsville area or Los Angeles, and five grandchildren.
Bloomfield Iowa missing University of Iowa student Jim Gilfillan has been found safe at a resort in Wolfeboro New Hampshire. His father Dr C D Gilfillan reported a telegram confirmed his son was fine and would return with his mother. A $1000 reward was offered for information leading to his whereabouts.
President Eisenhower said he will nominate Neil H. McElroy, soap manufacturer, to succeed Charles E. Wilson as secretary of defense after a routine fitness investigation. Wilson plans to leave the Cabinet before the defense department’s fall budgeting cycle. The President praised McElroy as one of America’s most capable men.

Vincent J. Maxheim 50 of Clinton was the sole announced candidate for Iowa American Legion commander at the Davenport convention after a special committee nominated him. Retiring commander Kenneth J. Benda of Hartwick and a slate of vice commanders were named, with G. M. Brown urging revitalization and younger veterans to join. The 34th Iowa Nebraska National Guard Band joined the parade with about 30 musical groups.
Des Moines officials report a spike in delinquent tax payments after the Iowa Tax Commission warned of liens and distress warrants. Commission Chairman Leon Miller said about 15 to 20 people per day paid before the warning, rising to 100 on Monday and 150 on Tuesday.

Funeral services for Don C. Singleton 64 will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Powell Funeral Home Keota with Rev Russell Lester in charge and burial in Keota Cemetery where the VFW will conduct military rites. Singleton died August 6 1957 at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City after illness. He was born March 2 1893 in Richland the son of John E and Mary Biggs Singleton. He married Cordelle Herr October 15 1919 at Washington and the couple lived on a farm northwest of Keota. He was a World War I veteran and a VFW member. Survivors include his widow a daughter Betty Smith Des Moines a son Dale Keota three grandchildren and three sisters Mrs Clare Augustine Brighton Mrs Ada Hotle Richland and Mrs Myrtle Smith Ft Collins Colo.
A coroner's jury ruled a major defect in the television set electrocuted five year old Howard Erenstein in Skokie July 14. The verdict cited a pinched 135 volt bus bar on the assembly line and urged stronger safety codes for the industry. GE officials said investigations would follow with free checks for owners of company made portable sets.

Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Berlin with Anastas Mikoyan for a seven day visit.
