Flint Michigan police waited through the hot months for lighter summer uniforms. The first shift to wear the new garments reported for duty as temperatures cooled to 46 degrees, marking the debut of the changeover.
Mrs Eisenhower, 59, had a two hour gynecologic operation at Walter Reed Hospital this morning for a benign condition not cancer related. President Eisenhower was in the White House consulting with Republican leaders as details were released by White House secretary James Hagerty stating the surgery was planned and not an emergency.
The House passed a bill to let the Defense Department screen out draftees in the bottom 30 percent IQ group. Currently the Army must accept those passing physicals unless in the lowest 10 percent IQ group. Representative Overton Brooks argued for greater selectivity citing 1956 data and an eight million dollar cost from discharges.
The Adams Chamber of Commerce says it has the United States youngest member, Neil Jacobs aged 16, a high school student who runs his own venetian blind repair and cleaning business.
Ford officials told the House traffic safety subcommittee that universal use of seat belts could cut annual fatalities from about 46 000 to under 19 000 and reduce serious injuries from a million to about 500 000. Ford's Haynes noted belts keep passengers inside the car and lessen crash forces, while Stapp endorsed belts though independent researchers dispute their safety.
Decomposed bodies of two babies, possibly twins, were found in a sealed red bread box at a Greyhound bus terminal in Erie Pennsylvania. The box had been sealed for at least six months and was found among unclaimed baggage in rental lockers. An autopsy will determine if they were alive when placed in the box.
Rosann Crayne of the Washington Hustlers 4H Club won both the champion individual market pig and the champion pen of three at the fair. David Henderson, Crooked Creek Cyclones and son of Crawfordsville, took the champion litter and reserve champion pen of three. Larry Shalla earned reserve litter honors for the Jackson Boys. Weather and crowds boosted opening festivities as judging continued and plans for upcoming sheep cattle and dairy judging were announced.
Six head of Duroc swine shown by Knotek Brothers of Riverside placed in the ribbon group at the 1957 National Duroc Congress held July 31 to August 2 in Peoria Illinois. A pen of three spring gifts placed third in their class and sold for 4H work to Wisconsin at 35 dollars each. A bred gift entry from Knotek Brothers stood in third group and sold to Illinois University for 200 dollars.
Anxious parents of James Gilfillan 21 seek word on their missing son who disappeared from the University of Iowa March 20 after telling a roommate he would hitchhike to Chicago. They offered a $1,000 reward for information and fear he may be in a large city using an assumed name while pursuing writing.
A surprise walkout by 800 television engineers in Chicago San Francisco New York and Los Angeles halted the Welk show and left WBKB off air for about an hour. Union officials blamed management for shifting work outside the bargaining unit while ABC and Welk officials blamed the dispute on a Philadelphia affiliate. A backup program was staged for the audience as technicians settled the strike in New York and staff returned to work.
Republican leaders vow to press for amendments in a House Senate conference after President Eisenhower deemed the Senate civil rights bill unacceptable. House GOP Leader Joseph W. Martin Jr. said Republicans will oppose moving the bill as written and suggested the President would likely veto unless changes are made.
Ethel Bones, 38, of Chicago, escaped from an Illinois state hospital and stood on Lock and Dam 14 for about two hours at Le Claire. Police used a rope to seize her as hospital officials persuaded her to come down.
At the London disarmament conference the Soviet Union pressed why the open skies proposal excludes bases in North Africa the Near East Turkey and Pakistan. Valerian Zorin posed three questions on inspection zones and timetables while Harold Stassen defended the plan noting limits and regional concerns.

The Navy announced plans to decommission the USS Iowa, the last active battleship, along with 59 other Atlantic and Pacific fleet vessels as part of a military economy drive. The Wisconsin will retire in October, while the Missouri and the New Jersey are already decommissioned.
Southerly winds lifted temperatures to the upper 80s in the west and lower 80s in the east with clear skies and no rainfall reported in four days. The forecast calls for continued warmth through Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s and lows around 55 to 65, while Waterloo set a record low of 48 overnight.

Washington merchants will close at noon Wednesday to allow 4H and FFA members to attend the County Fair at Townsley Park. Chamber of Commerce surveys showed many will shut as a courtesy and to show support for the annual event. The Evening Journal office will also close at noon though the paper will publish as usual in the afternoon.
The Brown Shoe Fit Company marks its 46th anniversary with roots in Shenandoah Iowa founded by W A Brown. The firm grew from a 9 foot wide first store to 33 outlets across five states and has operated in Washington state for 11 years since buying the local store from Fred L Moore. The current Brown location has housed a shoe store for 94 years.
Mr and Mrs Claire Guinn of Pierce Nebraska spent several days with Mr and Mrs Merle Smith in town and called on Glen Lord Mrs Eva Rabenold and Richard Stout in the Ainsworth area. The Guinns formerly lived in Ainsworth.
Senate Labor Rackets Committee heard testimony alleging New York racketeer John Dio Dioguardi demanded 2500 to keep other unions from picketing shops that signed a sweetheart contract with a Dio controlled union. Stanley Lehrer testified the Auto Glass Dealers Association paid 25 per employee to ward off jurisdictional picketing, explained by Dio through Equitable Research Associates Corp.
In Santiago Cuba American workers rush wives and children to safety as rebel threat and rising violence loom. Ten of fifteen wives of local Texas Company employees have left, with more to depart. Police detain two Florida men suspected of joining rebels, while U S officials and opposition leaders respond to tensions and a five day general strike.
