Des Moines report says Iowa will cover next year's additional general expenditures by 19 million from special taxes and other sources, with the one mill property levy expected to yield about three million. Marvin Leo Carlson 24 of Neola drowned while swimming in Spirit Lake after an all day fishing outing. Sweeney attempted rescue but was pulled under as Carlson sank twice. George Carlson, a cousin, rowed the boat. all three were Neola residents. This was Spirit Lake’s first drowning of the summer.
BLOOMFIELD Kenneth Robinson of Keokuk is jailed on $1000 bond after arraignment on obtaining money under false pretenses. Officials say he contracted with farmers for electric refrigerators and took down payments without authorization from the companies he claimed to represent.
Iowa parole board releases 22 prisoners including Charles Butler age 30 who was committed to Anamosa for life for second degree murder of Red Tyler in Cedar Rapids. Butler sentence reduced from life to 35 years by former Gov Clyde L. Herring in 1936.
Des Moines hosts the Iowa American Legion convention opening Sunday featuring fourteen ensembles totaling about 500 musicians. Dan O’Brien says advance registrations point to 6,000 to 7,000 attendees. Speakers include Richard G. Casey Australian minister to the U S Brig Gen Lewis B Hershey SSS director Milo J Warner and Harrison F Anderson of Minneapolis G M I vice president.
Maytag factory in Newton posts notices announcing the temporary closing of the assembly department from Wednesday night to the following Tuesday morning. A. R. Rogers of Waterloo, 55, a noted maintainer for railroad workers unions, escaped with minor injuries after his car wrecked five and a half miles west of West Chester yesterday afternoon. Authorities say he apparently fell asleep while driving from Kansas City to Columbus Junction, and the vehicle left the highway.

A navy dispatch from the presidential yacht Potomac says the presidential party cruises toward an unannounced destination with Mr Roosevelt kept advised by radio. The message mentions sunning, good fishing, and no announced destination. it does not confirm Roosevelt or Churchill aboard, though rumors of a Churchill meeting persist.
Bobby Berdo eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs Henry Berdo was injured yesterday after four o clock when he fell about thirty feet through a trap door in the hay mow at the Berdo farm northeast of town He landed on the cement floor suffered a brain concussion and was unconscious at noon though showing signs of improvement earlier in the morning A group of children had been watching threshing flax and were playing hide and seek in the hay mow at the time of the fall

The 878 ballots showed 516 for the independent union, 323 for Local 89 of the United Packing House Workers of America, 13 neither, 25 challenged and thrown out, and 1 vote invalid. The company has no current union contract.
Washington county selective service board mailed questionnaires to 22 young men aged 21 who registered July first. They have ten days to return them. the S prefix denotes second registration and orders 266 to 600 were used to sift 1940 and 1941 registrants.
