Police sought two bandits who robbed John S Lucas, a Chicago jewelry salesman, of about 29000 dollars in samples as he traveled from Muscatine to Wapello.
Joe Keller of Maryville Missouri and Henry Hoetsher of Eudora Kansas were jailed Wednesday on charges they weighed down empty trucks with sandbags to cheat farmers. The men, corn haulers, allegedly discarded the sand before loading up.
Coroner Harvey Jones said an inquest will be held Monday into the automobile truck deaths of Milo J Konicek 20 and Mildred Kosnar 17 both of Clutter Homer Kepier of Elberon driver of the truck was arrested for driving while intoxicated and released on $500 bond.

Dubuque county Democrats at the second district convention in Clinton disclosed they have asked Gov Clyde L Herring to appoint the widow of late Senator Louis Murphy to succeed him The move reflects an effort to place a familiar local name in the senate race and maintain party strength following Murphy's death.
Washington reports L. L. Hill of Des Moines acting Iowa WPA administration will likely resign promptly after returning to Des Moines this week. Sources say he reached a deal with Gov. Clyde L. Herring and relief administrator Aubrey Williams, though Hill left without commenting on the agreement.
Boone voters approved a two year renewal for the Iowa Electric Light & Power Co franchise in a special election. The tally was 2,204 in favor and 492 opposed.
Registration for the 37th annual Rural Letter Carriers convention neared 1,000 by Thursday night with Walter Broberg of Storm Lake noting expectations of 1,200 to 1,500. J Ed Cooper of the U S Post Office Rural Mail Division spoke, citing Iowa rural routes totaling 63,819 miles and 1,621 routes with 107 extensions aiding 1,474 previously unserved families.

Detroit dispatch reports former New York governor Al Smith, 1928 Democratic presidential candidate, will stump in Boston for London. Massachusetts Governor Ely, at Constitutional Democrats conference, said Smith plans an independent rally, likely heard across Boston, with no formal party backing.

Captain O. J. Brown announced plans to have sixty Troop F, 113th Cavalry, in camp at Camp Dodge for two weeks starting August 16. An advance detail of eight troopers will depart August 13 to prepare quarters, with the full unit to follow on August 16 aboard a Rock Island special train under First Lieutenant Walter G. Conner. The cavalry timing overlaps with Iowa infantry camp schedules, with both groups in camp for about one week.
Director Milburn A. McKay and the Washington Municipal band went to Sigourney yesterday evening to play for the opening program of the community celebration which began there last night and will continue through Saturday. They said Sigourney had a big crowd last night and has prepared for a celebration of considerable proportions. The celebration is called Yen Ruo Gis, Sigourney spelled backwards.
Lisbon reports two Portuguese ships carrying troops are sailing toward Madeira to reinforce defenses in response to growing concerns. Official dispatch confirms naval units proceeding from Lisbon with orders to bolster the island garrison.
President Roosevelt announced plans to invite Governor Alf Landon and other midwestern governors to a drought relief conference in Iowa, likely Des Moines, in early September. He expects to tour the drought damage regions starting August 25 or 26, visiting the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, then Iowa and neighboring states, before moving to Illinois and other states.

Three Black Legion members were found guilty in Detroit of kidnapping and flogging steelworker Robert Penland. The convicted men are Earl Angstadt, Thomas Cox, and Fred Gulley. Convictions carry up to five years in prison and fines up to $2,500 or both. Acquittals were handed to three co-defendants.

Des Moines Aug 7 AP J Lewis president of the Iowa Federation of Labor predicted adoption of a resolution favoring President Roosevelt at next week's annual labor convention. He added however that Iowa labor would not necessarily support the democratic ticket.
Marshal Blaine Holmes reported at 9:30 this morning that a car missing yesterday was located in Sunset park. It had run out of gasoline and likely abandoned by thieves. Earlier last night, gasoline was stolen from Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey’s old car near the county jail, not the deputy’s work vehicle.
