British observers say the cabinet may inform the United Nations tomorrow that Britain is ready to end its rule in Palestine. A partition plan by Anglo American experts is under consideration and Washington’s stance remains officially unacknowledged.
The Washington city council adopted the annual budget estimate at last night’s meeting. A hearing on the budget is scheduled for August 19 at 7 30 p m to receive objections. The estimate shows a small rise from last year due to higher material costs and salary increases. Local property owners discussed sewer and water connections with the mayor and council, including Sam Simmering Marvin Buckwalter and Bill MacColl. Davenport residents talked about a proposed bowling alley project in the east part of town, but no action was taken.
Girls under nine with YWCA memberships will hike tomorrow morning guided by Jean Atchison, YWCA director. They will meet at 11 20 at the YWCA rooms after marionette class and bring a sack lunch. the Wednesday story hour moves from 1 36 to 2 30 tomorrow.

Three men were arrested in Clinton after a carload of stolen goods was recovered, ending a spree across Centerville, Davenport, Iowa City, Muscatine, Clinton and Topeka Kansas. Arrested were Robert Lutton 19 and parolee, William Callison 22, and Melvin Butty all Davenport besides a fourth suspected member Dennis Doulley Rock Island.
DES MOINES Aug 6 The September draft call in Iowa will be about 750 men. Col Ralph Lancaster assistant selective service director said this will be the first call since June due to the draft holiday. Lancaster noted the army asked selective service to furnish about 25 000 men in September and that state draft boards face difficulty.
President Truman departed Fairfax airport at 1 06 P M for Washington. He stopped in St Louis to pick up Treasury Secretary Snyder and family. He voted with his daughter Margaret in the Memorial building and returned to Washington with Federal District Judge John Caskie Collet for a key economic post. Rep Jasper Bell faced renomination in Truman's district.
Tokyo police report the rate of death by own action more than doubled in the first half of this year with 569 cases recorded. This compares with 505 for all of 1946, highlighting a sharp rise in self inflicted fatalities.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a slight drop in retail food prices in the last week of July, though overall food costs remain about 31 percent higher than a year ago. The June to July rise in consumer costs is the largest one-month gain since 1940, driven by a 30 to 80 percent jump in meat prices and a 20 percent rise in dairy products.
King Johnson of Brighton reported a Neptune outboard motor stolen from his boat tied to the Skunk River bank. He believes the theft occurred Saturday night after entry into the office was gained by forcing the door.
Lt. Col. Hobert J. Shaw formerly of Sigourney died in Munich Germany last Friday of a heart ailment. A veteran of World Wars he advised the state selective service board and prosecuted Nazi war criminals overseas. Survived by his widow and son he was 55.

Secretary of State James Byrnes angrily charged Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov with misrepresentation and dictatorial tactics at the peace conference. Molotov accepted Byrnes’ challenge to publish the exchange in the Soviet press as members of the small powers bloc faced the two thirds voting issue.
Chicago August 6 prices on 180 to 270 pound hogs dropped 25 to 59 cents per hundredweight. Heavier hogs and sows sold 50 cents or more under yesterday with early top at 24.24. St Louis bids for hogs over 170 pounds ran 24 to 24.25 as most hogs stayed around 24.50 or higher. The Chicago Livestock Exchange suspended trading at 1 PM in memory of B H Heide.
Des Moines reports July cigarette revenues reach 435,311.72 dollars, up from 290,745.96 in June and 217,905.38 higher than July 1945. Beer collections for July totaled 104,050.37 dollars, up slightly from June but down from July 1945.
