County Fair Opens Monday With Record Exhibits

Preparations for the Washington County 4H and FFA fair are complete at the grounds. Exhibits begin with Monday judging at 12 30 pm and a full four day schedule includes dairy cattle rabbits poultry market pigs sheep baby beeves and livestock parades with entertainment, contests, a civil defense exhibit and half price rides on Kids Day Thursday.

Soviet Offer of 28 Million Credit to Tunisia for Dam

The Soviet Union offered Tunisia a 28 million dollar credit to finance dam construction and a proposed Tunisian training institute for technicians. Official talks to use the funds will begin soon, in a broader technical cooperation framework. Separately, Tunisian governor of Bizerte was stopped by French gendarmes for identity checks during a city passage.

Winners Of Demonstrations At Fair Grounds

The Washington County 4H group held 7 demonstrations at the fairgrounds on Thursday evening. Five junior and two senior teams received blue and red awards for projects including care of baby pigs, fencing problems, shop tools, picket construction, loading chutes, switch wiring, and ladder safety. Gail Shellburg of Washington judged the contest and winners represent Washington County at the Iowa State Fair later this month.

At Louisa County Fair Columbus Junction the baby beeves sale topped by a reserve grand champion Hereford owned by Nancy Schomberg Letts selling for 28.25 per hundred to Columbus Junction State Bank. Fasting followers rally as raid frees cult leaders in standoff

FBI state police and Marines stormed the Harrell cult compound near Mount Vernon in a pre-dawn operation to seize leader John R. Harrell and 18 followers. Harrell and 16 associates faced charges while bonds were set. no shots were fired. The raid ended with Harrell trapped in a tunnel as supporters vowed continued fasting and prayer.

Rites Held For Tonasket Infant At Clear Creek Burial

Graveside rites were held at 2 p.m. today in Sts Peter and Paul Cemetery Clear Creek for Robin Dean Tonasket infant son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Tonasket. Robin Dean born early Friday at Mercy Hospital Des Moines lived 12 hours. Survivors include the parents one sister Mickey Jean a brother Eddie Eugene and grandparents Mr and Mrs Clarence Greiner Richland Wayne Tonasket Sr of Washington state and Mrs Dodge of Oregon.

FFA Plans Stand Operation for Fair Refreshment Booth

The Washington FFA chapter finalized operations for the county fair refreshment stand. Remodeling and cleaning were completed around a Friday night meeting. In Dubuque Iowa reliable Mary Madigan 29 was scheduled for arraignment on a homicide charge after three young children aged 4 months to 3 years died while in her care over 23 days. 161 Eligible For Certificates From Red Cross Swimming

Five Day Temperature Outlook From UPI News

The five day forecast through Wednesday calls for near normal temperatures with normal highs in the low 80s to northeast and upper 80s southwest. Lows range from the low 60s northeast to mid 60s southwest. Early period rain and potential thunderstorms, with cooler conditions on Saturday and Sunday and a warm trend back by Monday. Rain chances average from a quarter inch north to half to an inch south.
