The August national quota is set with state shares and a federal payroll allotment of 9 750 000. Territorial quotas are Alaska 769 000 Canal Zone 213 000 Hawaii 4 800 000 Puerto Rico 440 000 Virgin Islands 17 000. U S Treasury Department.
Washington county leaders and welfare director Douglas Smith ask residents to send panhandling transients to the county welfare office for help. They note a rise in door to door requesters and say funds are available to aid the needy while urging public cooperation to encourage work and reduce parasitic begging.
A mid July Caribbean storm era attack sank a medium British merchant ship ten miles off a West Indian island. Four engine room crew were killed, three merchant crewmen and one gunner were lost, leaving forty two survivors.
In Riverside park Cedar Rapids 19 year old David Finn was pulled from five feet of water after being seen playing. 14 year old Bob Malone rescued the swamped boy about 75 yards away as bystanders alerted others. Firemen and an ambulance crew used an inhalator to aid the youths.
Wayne Heller aged 22 and his brother Darwin 19 from a Warren County farm were sentenced to five years at the Ana casa reformatory by District Judge Norman Hayes on grand larceny charges. They confessed to stealing lightning rods cables and copper wiring from schoolhouses and breaking equipment from 12 Rock Island railroad cars. Appeal bond set at $2 000.
A Spencer student and an instructor from the Spencer air corps training school were reported killed in an airplane crash here. Details of the crash were not immediately available.
Harold R. Levers, 18, Osage businessman, pleaded guilty in district court to three counts of attempted arson. Judge Tom Boynton sentenced him to six years in Fort Madison state penitentiary, two years per count. He was arrested after trying to torch a building across from the fire department amid a spate of recent fires. none of the burned structures belonged to him and eight people were seriously injured.
London reports a British submarine torpedoed and sank the Italian ship Ada after it ran into a mine. Several other vessels were damaged in the incident.
Sheriff H M Putnam urged Washington citizens to unite for total war effort recalling his WWI service and his prisoner brother Paul Putnam. Chief George Baker noted auxiliary police work while Ralph Shannon discussed wartime propaganda. Evening sessions extend next week with 211 attendees.
Nationalist leaders in Bombay announce a one week ultimatum to Britain demanding immediate independence or face civil disobedience. Mohandir Gandhi to deliver the note to the Marquess of Linlithgow while Maulana Azad says a new resolution pledges support for the United Nations once independence is granted.
Oscar Ewing, assistant to the Attorney General, charged that William Dudley Pelley used sugar coated religious teachings to lure followers and undermine the government. He described Pelleys protests of loyalty as a smoke screen masking a dangerous intent against America.
In the high school auditorium on Thursday evening at eight o'clock the second and final public meeting was announced by Ivan Norton commander of the county citizens defense corps.
German warplanes over Iceland machine-gunned a lighthouse in the northwest with no damage or casualties reported. A second sighting over the southeastern region followed as planes, likely from Norway, increased activity over the island, United States forces said.
Mrs. Ben Bruegge reports a brown leghorn hen laid a bullet-shaped egg two inches long and three and a quarter inches in circumference. The egg has a hard shell and natural color.
Des Moines reports three Washington men enlisted in the navy yesterday. Named are Edward L. Nardy John D Hazen and Gene Turner in a post and enroll list distributed today.
The Kenoke Veneer Co. plant in Mellen Wisconsin burned down today, destroying the world's largest airplane wood veneer facility. The loss is estimated at $500,000 and about 400 workers were left unemployed. The plant supplied veneer for United Nations aircraft.
Iowa City residents report Cadet George L. Turner of Louisville Kentucky was named the first regimental commander at the Iowa pre flight school. Turner said his main goal is to fly as soon as possible and he can yell the loudest.

Mrs Gwendolyne Pearl Martin 33 wife of Carl Martin died last night after a nine month illness at the Martin home in Washington. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 30 pm at L A Jones funeral home with the Rev Dr R C Keagy officiating and burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was a Harper Iowa native, lived in Washington 15 years, and is survived by her husband three children Janete Nadine Jack Duane and Carol Matlene ten siblings led by Oscar Baker and others in Washington Sigourney Cedar Rapids Keota Red Oak and nearby towns.
At Crystal Springs south of Jackson Mississippi an Illinois Central passenger train and a Greyhound bus collided killing an unestimated number of persons. All ambulances have been sent to the scene.
The State Theater presented Gone With The Wind for the 34th time in Washington. Tuesday night’s performance set a record as the biggest audience yet, with more people attending than any previous Washington showing.

James A. Morris son of Lt. Col. D. A. Morris entered the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1 as part of the largest entering class. He is an 18 year old nephew of Hugh Morris from near Ainsworth and was appointed by Congressman Tom Martin after graduating Sullivan Military Academy in Washington DC. His father is currently on duty in Iceland.
