Iowa Supreme Court refused to reopen the mail order use tax case. United States Supreme Court ruled that mail order firms should collect the two percent use tax on goods sold to Iowa customers. Attorneys for Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward sought to reopen for more arguments, but the Iowa high court denied the request.
The Senate rejected Taft's plan 50 to 27 to cap selectee service at 18 months. The vote tests support for the administration's plan to extend service to two and one half years. Taft also proposed replacing troops starting April 1942 at about 50,000 monthly.
Broadlawns General Hospital breaks ground on a $550,000 new hospital and nurses home to double Polk County’s care capacity for the indigent sick. The project, begun after a 1922 site cost of $525,000, is hailed as a 20 year dream by Horace Hollingsworth, former trustee, and hospital administrator T. P. Sharpnack.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety begins a statewide campaign to eliminate blinding headlights with tests in every county. In Adel two portable headlight testing screens were set up by Chief Clint Knee and patrolmen, testing motorists and issuing courtesy cards for faulty beams.
Boone reports Emma Feely, 75, died from stove fumes in her home. Found partly dressed in her bedroom with a kitchen jet open. Coroner Harry Schroed ey ruled no suicide intent. Neighbors described her as forgetful and living alone.
Testimony stalled in Joe W True’s action against Council Bluffs dog racing as defense lawyers challenge District Judge Charles Roe’s jurisdiction. Attorneys for operators Meyer Lansky and William J. CHICAGO Aug 6 The largest railway wage negotiation in U S history collapsed as railroads rejected a 30 percent pay increase demand by 1 150,000 employees. The mediation board now becomes the next step in disputes over wages and working rules under the railway labor act and may intervene on its own motion or at party request or if a strike vote is taken.

In Grinnell farmer Kailand inspected his crops and spotted a large puff ball in the corn field. The ball measured about twice a basketball in diameter and weighed a little over 18 pounds.
Plans finalize for the annual Washington County 4-H achievement show August 18 to 20 with home economics displays in the Methodist church basement and livestock exhibits in the new Armory. Judging starts Monday noon with dairy heifers and baby beef calves, followed by Monday afternoon clothing judging. Demonstration contest and Style Revue run Tuesday, with a general program Tuesday evening. Captain Jay Brown announces Troop D and the 113th Cavalry will join large war maneuvers in Louisiana. Starting August 8 mail for the unit goes to Troop D 113th Cavalry A P O 308 Bagley Louisiana, with all regimental personnel sharing the address near Mansfield. Many soldiers depart from Camp Bowie this week and the unit expects arrival at the Louisiana camp by August 11. Mrs Brown will return to Washington Friday.
