Armstrong teen Luella Webber, 19, dies at West Okoboji lake near Terrace park during a family outing. Dickinson county coroner Dr. B W Jones says she did not drown but was strangled and suffocated while surface diving with brothers Norbert 17 and Edward 11. Doctors noted she entered the water too soon after lunch.
Des Moines Iowa reports 33 546 Iowa men in United States military service nearly a third of wartime strength from 1917 18 Frank Miles editor of the Iowa Legionaire now captain with the Iowa selective service headquarters notes that by July 1 there were 9 097 Iowa men drafted into the armed forces Under that date 8 112 Iowa men were in the regular army 8 489 in the navy 868 in the marine corps 6 818 on active duty in the national guard and 162 in the coast guard
The United States Department of Agriculture reports Iowa has adequate demand for farm labor but only 76 percent of normal supply as of July 1, creating a 24 percent shortage. The state remains better off than most corn belt states but still faces labor gaps for farmers.
A dust load from ANITA A blamed for a head on collision injuring six people near Viota. Wesley Morgan 30 suffered brain concussion and shoulder contusion. His wife and 12 year old son Billy were cut. In the other car Betty Arnett 16 suffered abdominal contusion while Betty Karns 15 and Dean Arnett 20 had minor cuts.
Police report in Waterloo says burglars forced a safe at Schuker Chevrolet Co using tools from the company garage after breaking a window. They fled empty handed, and the attempted burglary was found two hours after a routine police check.
The Des Moines River Association of Primitive Baptist Churches held a three day centennial observance at the Primitive Baptist church two miles north of Eldon. About 300 persons from Iowa, Illinois and Missouri attended. Eldon church built in 1894 replacing a prior building erected about a century earlier.
Helsinki dispatch says the Finnish high command reports Russian forces suffered more than 1000 killed and captured armored cars and other equipment in a battle on the eastern front.
The War Department U S Engineer Office St Paul District awarded Carris Manufacturing a contract late last week to fabricate and assemble a Multiple Lock Test Recorder. The device will be used with locks on the Sault Ste Marie canal.

Ervin Sommers twenty six of near Crawfordsville sustained minor bruises after dozing at the wheel caused his car to strike the Crooked Creek bridge rail three miles south of Crawfordsville. The vehicle rolled over on the bridge. Sommers received first aid at a physician’s office then returned home.
The county club agent J Harrison Donald will base himself at the Farm Bureau office and work with County Agent J W Chandler. Mr Donald, a graduate of Iowa State College, Ames, a year ago, is becoming acquainted with local boys.

The remark followed a U S warning linking American attitude to French resistance against axis influence. A Berlin Nazi spokesman dismissed the U S stance as partly threatening and partly impertinent.
The past week saw nine new car licenses in Washington County with four since August began. July totals reached 72 new cars. Buyers listed include Walter H. Lussky of Washington a Chevrolet town sedan and Mrs. C. M. Farrier of Brighton a Chevrolet sedan among others.
In Boone Iowa today a car driven by Mrs. Howard Sprague husband lost control and struck a cement abutment killing Mrs Sprague 25 and Jane Williams 20 instantly. United Press round up notes details.
Camp Bowie dispatch: Captain O J Brown now leads the 113th Cavalry Service Troop after Captain Cowles death. Lt Walter G Conner will command Troop D with plans for rapid promotion, while Majors reassigned Lieutenants Donaldson and Young return to Troop D from E and F. Several corporals are reduced or promoted as the unit reshuffles.

Japanese ships sailing to the United States were suspended indefinitely, isolating Americans and other foreigners in Tokyo. Funeral services for Mrs Emma Page were conducted Sunday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home by Dr. R C Keagy of the Methodist church, with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Roy and Jesse Page, Harold and Clarence Bain, George and Wayne Zeck.Emma Betty Jane Todd born Sept 10 1856 in Cedar township later moved to Jackson township and then town.
