Jim Williams of Deloit, owner of a Denison gas station, pulled a revolver from a suitcase and accidentally shot himself just above the heart. He was taken to Denison hospital where doctors say his condition is critical.
Thousands of grasshoppers were seen flying high over Decatur County and Mount Ayr on Wednesday. Observers reported a silvery mass rising about 300 feet in the air moving southwest as swarms covered the sky and then dispersed.
The Marengo site receives 24 tanks of bullheads from the state conservation commission hatchery at Lansing. Some fish were sourced by seine in sloughs along the Mississippi that are at risk of drying up. Fish varied in size.
William Jan sa Jr. 22 of Western drowned while swimming in the Town river. He and his brother Ernest and friend Ea Slezak were preparing to swim when he stepped into a hole and disappeared. Ernest said William was not a good swimmer and had just entered the water.

Iowa No 2 will connect with Illinois No 2 at Muscatine as announced by Iowa state highway engineer Fred R White to Don L Berry president of the Iowa Short Line association. Illinois No 2 will extend from the Muscatine bridge over the Mississippi through Moline Sterling Dixon Rockford to Beloit Wisconsin. The Iowa route runs from Muscatine to Council Bluffs and will be hard surfaced across Iowa with paving near Columbus Junction Grand View in Louisa county.
Cy Bush of the Bush feed yard was the lowest bidder among three and won the county coal contract. The deal covers furnishing Franklin county coal in 6x3 egg size to the courthouse, county jail, county home, county yards, and for the poor. The county home price is $5.34 per ton on the track.
At a Washington board of education meeting four teachers were elected to fill vacancies from resignations. Dorothy Raymond replaces Mabel Rice in primary, Roberta Stone becomes vocal music instructor, Meda Fisher is girls' physical training, and Thomas Parsons succeeds biology teacher Gertrude Morrison. Budget hearing approved a total tax raise of 95 000 for general fund and 15 000 for school fund.
The county sets coal delivery prices at $6.45 per ton after September, with a higher rate of $6.55 per ton for deliveries to the poor in smaller lots. The price increase reflects smaller delivery quantities.

Charles Hazlett of Washington is material inspector. County roads nearly finished with surfacing, Washington to Riverside completed, work to wrap in a week or two.
The summer music school at the high school ends tomorrow. Maurice Brayton teaches brass and reed instruments while Ruth Stewart guides stringed instruments. Twelve students study violins with Miss Stewart, plus one viola and one string bass. Brayton runs private lessons for 25 students. In the band program 45 participate in the first band and 36 in the second. Instrument counts include 30 clarinets, 20 cornets, 19 trombones, five flutes, three French horns, two oboes, one bassoon, one baritone, three tubas and three drums.
A disturbance during which riot police confronted crowds left ten people injured. Officials had deployed about 11 000 personnel to manage the unrest and restore order.
