Washington reports deep unrest over the industrial crisis as railroads and unions vow to accept labor board rulings. Harding's cabinet says the government will stay hands off unless railroads fail, with potential board action on seniority and possible receiverships for inefficient lines.
Officials warn that if rolling stock deteriorates or if the big four unions join the shopmen strike there will be rapid government action. With winter fuel shortages in view, the President’s aides say a marked improvement in service is required to avert intervention. Brotherhoods accuse inspectors of lax enforcement under the Transportation Act.
A wave of lawlessness hits Buffalo during the street car strike with explosives thrown at cars. A bomb exploded under a rear vestibule, throwing the conductor several feet. Guard Patrohwen Durance Lounsberry was struck as the car floor and pavement were damaged.
A coal train en route from Paducah Kentucky to Carbondale Illinois was fired upon near Carbondale at night after signs appeared along the line reading Notice Railroad men Quit beating see coal. The crew reported the incident following the scattered notices posted along the railroad.
Fires rage from the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and into British Columbia territory. Dozens of blazes in Montana Idaho and Washington threaten government timber and private reserves as hot dry weather and lightning fuel the spread. One firefighter is killed by a falling tree near Floehl Creek Idaho.

Gov Prentice foresees rail seizures if coal supply remains jeopardized and says four railroads could be taken over by the federal government.
Chicago announces settlement of the street car strike after talks between the Chicago Surface Lines board of control and Division 41 of the street car men’s union. Workers will receive 70 cents per hour, an eight hour day, and existing rules on fallback time layover meal time and reporting time. A union referendum will decide contract acceptance.
The Interstate Commerce Commission issued a new priority order advancing total retail coal use and designating district agents to supervise distribution in nonunion southeast districts. Naval officers are appointed as federal fuel distributors, with a list of district representatives in West Virginia Virginia Kentucky Tennessee and Alabama.
The text notes that a railroading agency and the government will coordinate and that railroads serving the districts will have a representative on duty at district headquarters starting Monday. The specific railroad names and representatives were not announced.
Berlin Aug 5 Germany sends a note to France saying it cannot accept the latest indemnity demands. The reply is to Premier Poincaré's communication from a week earlier and signals Germany expects new proposals to be submitted for careful examination.

Washington officials announce night air mail flights will power their radios by air speed and pass through the continent at high speed. Postmaster General Work confirms plans to begin night mail service this autumn. The New York to Chicago route is slated to take eight hours.
Chicago August 5 The terms proposed to Frank Farrington head of the Illinois Miners Union by operators groups would end a strike in Illinois within forty eight hours if accepted. The plan requires miners to return to work under the wage rates in effect at the strike and calls for an arbitration board to begin permanent settlement talks. Pre strike conditions would apply pending a lasting agreement.
Paris reports German banks transferred between 600,000 and 70,000,000 French francs to Holland and Switzerland in the last 48 hours. The funds were withdrawn from deposits held by American and other foreign banks in Paris as fears rise over seizure by the French government for failing to pay the 2 million pound prewar private debt installment.
Attorney General Brundage interprets the mu nols prohibition act to forbid hard cider manufacture while allowing a farmer to press and ferment cider from his own apples for personal use or local sale as a minor exception.
Joseph O'Sullivan and Reginald Dunn, condemned for the assassination of Field Marshal Wilson, will be hanged on August 19. The announcement confirms the execution date.
