Karl Jones was thrown from his motorcycle at the south end of the railroad underpass on North Second Avenue Saturday afternoon. He is hospitalized with possible cracked ribs concussion jaw injury and extensive bruises. Police report a loose item around the front fender caused the sudden stop.
An 18 year old West Burlington girl, Margaret Mosher, was found dead in her car after the vehicle was struck by the Ak Sar Ben Zephyr on Burlington Railroad tracks ten miles west of Burlington. The girl, in the back seat, was in a parked car with no lights observed by the conductor and engineer. A death by own action note was found at her home.
A weekend accident on the Des Moines River near Ottumwa left four youngsters in peril. Truman children Shawn 6 Kelly 5 and Reesa 3 drowned after a pontoon boat overturned while the Nelson infant Kimberly Diane week-old was missing and pursued by divers. Adults and a Truman daughter were rescued as river currents impeded search efforts. Scuba teams recovered the three Truman children as authorities widened the investigation.
Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin challenged fairness of blaming farmers for higher food costs. He said farm income rose late but remains low relative to costs, and that agriculture has boosted productivity but farm per capita income lags 25 percent behind nonfarm levels. He urged urban support for forthcoming programs combining land retirement and crop adjustment.
Opening day at the Washington County Fair features ideal weather and busy activity at the fairgrounds west of Washing ton. Exhibitors bring livestock and other entries for judging over the next days with events including 4-H and FFA livestock judging, cattle and garden projects, and a Friday horse show. Evening entertainment features a tractor pull and a teen dance, with judging schedules listed for Tuesday and Wednesday and a parade of champions and awards planned Wednesday night.

In July the U S unemployment rate rose to 3.6 percent as payrolls increased by 190000 after seasonal adjustment. Total nonfarm employment stood at 70.6 million, with a 300000 labor-force gain and wage records climbing to 3.03 per hour and 115.44 per week. White unemployment rose to 3.2 percent while nonwhite fell to 6.4 percent.
UPI reports that Communist China is reorienting from the Vietnam war toward friction with the Soviet Union. Frontier clashes have intensified Red China's concern over deteriorating Soviet relations, even as Rogers says the United States is willing to improve ties with Peking.

Washington based official warns August deadline for Iowa cities on the Mississippi and Missouri to establish sewage treatment plants. Deputy assistant Interior Secretary Robert L. McCormick says failure to act will trigger strong federal action. Davenport and Dubuque cited as making progress. Burlington Clinton Davenport Dubuque Fort Madison Keokuk Muscatine Council Bluffs Sioux City named among affected towns.
Pasadena reports Mariner 6 data show water ice in Mars atmosphere, with no nitrogen detected. Mariner 7 will pass the south polar cap to assess whether it is frozen water or dry ice. canals on Mars appear as large dark blotches, not detailed structures.
United Press International reports Iowa will be clear to partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with a chance of thundershowers in the northwest. Temperatures show little change with a low of 60 to 65 tonight. Wednesday outlook calls for showery conditions and little temperature change.
