Peggy Kephart’s two year old entry in the Milking Shorthorn division was judged champion of that breed at the Washington County Fair Monday. Peggy is a young exhibitor in the county fair livestock show.
Crowds pack the Washington County Fairgrounds for the annual 4-H and FFA Fair with a four day program of judgments, contests, parades and entertainment. Dairy cattle and junior cattle feeder judging wrapped up Monday. events continue through Thursday with baby beeves, purebred beef, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits and poultry judged across days. Evening programs include a Jaycees beauty pageant, tractor and pony pulls, a Washington Municipal Band concert, parade of champions and the John Morrell Chorus. Special ribbons crowned top beeves in the junior cattle feeders competition as the fair runs with carnival games, commercial exhibits, and free bus service each day.
Nine miners trapped 260 feet underground at Mount Revel mine in ChampagNo le France were rescued eight days after a cave-in. Andre Jacques, 23, the first survivor, emerged at 5 16 p m following a drill breakthrough at 12 55 p m. Nine men were initially trapped with five still missing. rescuers reported the nine remaining survivors in good condition as they were brought to the surface in a silver capsule.

UPI reports daily China Mail claim that several U S warships left Hong Kong for secret destinations after a routine in port period. A U S consulate spokesman denied the report as untrue and said ships were on normal one week visits. In Vietnam, an Army enlisted man was killed in a Communist ambush near Saigon, the 175th American KIA in Vietnam. Four Vietnamese soldiers also died. The attack came as Johnson ordered Seventh Fleet to shoot to kill if attacked while patrolling off North Vietnam following the Maddox-Maddox incident with Soviet torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.
The junior livestock judging contest drew 172 competitors across 15 teams. Riverside Ramblers claimed the top individual honors with 198 points, tying with three others for first, while the Ramblers also won the team title with 788 points amid a close scoring field.
City council agrees to sell a small plot to United Presbyterian Home on East Washington, with part of a house on the property. A hearing is set for September 2. The park board and council will share water line costs of about 900 to 1000 dollars, split 50 50. Bids for airport runway surfacing will be opened tonight at 8 p.m.

The YMCA building in Washington will close Monday through Saturday as staff and many boys attend the Y camp at Lake Darling Youth Center. Only Monday noon is open for Rotary Club meeting and uniform turn in for Little League players. Boys 8 to 13 should contact the YMCA promptly to attend.

In Jersey City heavy riots erupt for a second night as Black youths throw Molotov cocktails and clash with police. One elderly white man is badly hurt, several officers struck, and 15 to 20 arrests made as 350 officers restore order. Civil rights leaders blame Mayor Whelan for not negotiating.
