Brighton prepares to open on August 27 with major remodeling at the high school and gym to house all classes. Aviation Electronics Mate Joseph Bernard Daugherty of East St. Louis and 12 crewmates died when a Martin P5M seaplane crashed in Zambales Province. Daugherty, the sole survivor, was rescued after a 30 hour search and treated for a broken jaw and burns. The wreckage lay on a 1600 foot ridge near Lingayen Gulf, and the cause remains under Navy review.
