At Washington the French ambassador Cambon met with President and officials to discuss Spain peace terms. Both sides pledged secrecy while a Madrid note sought further clarification. Military moves toward Porto Rico continue, with Wade's expedition details emphasized and safeguards for troops. Senator Burrows urged US control over Porto Rico and Cuba's future independence in a broader postwar plan.
Washington discusses how the United States should treat the Philippine insurgents if a truce with Spain is reached. Evansville Indiana reporting that John Peterson 10 and Charles Peterson 14 drowned off a shanty boat near Shawnestown after the younger fell into the river and the elder attempted a rescue. In Chicago, George F. P. Gore & Co. auctioneers, a longtime firm, was assigned yesterday with liabilities of 250000 and assets of 125000.
