Washington County Fair honors and livestock parade

Jean Rinner wins grand champion and second best Shorthorn in baby beef judging at the Washington County Fair. North Korean Pilot Defects to South Korea in MIG-15

2nd Lt. Chung Nak Hyun, 24, of the North Korean air force, defected from Wonsan to Taepok then landed at a South Korean air strip near Seoul. He cited longing for freedom and declined further comment, fearing for his family. Anti aircraft batteries did not fire as he crossed the DMZ.

Million Dollars For Cedar Rapids Airport

The Cedar Rapids airport commission was advised the Federal Aviation Administration allocated 1 034 995 for municipal airport improvements this fiscal year The funds come via Senator Rourke Hickenlooper and cover runway extension to 6 400 feet drainage work runway lighting taxiway widening and four warm up pads for aircraft The grant is about 32 000 less than requested and eliminates plans for improvements to the administration building

Virginia Matthews Named Pork Queen at Louisa County Fair

Miss Virginia Matthews of Wapello was chosen Miss Pork Queen of Louisa County at the Louisa County Fair in Columbus Junction. She will represent the county at the State Fair in Des Moines. The event was held with the Barrow Show and sponsored by the County Swine Producers Association. Winners in dairy heifer classes included Guernsey Tom Courtney division 1 and 4, plus Brown Swiss Farrel Wiley and Holstein Tom Newell among others. Ray Allen won the showmanship award. barrow open class winners were Stephens and Green of Ainsworth first and Gary Sheetz of Washington second.

Mabel Black Dies at Restopia Rest Home

Mabel Black, 78, of Brooklyn LA died Tuesday at Restopia Rest Home in Columbus Junction. The body was taken to Brame Mortuary in Brooklyn for services and burial. She had been at Restopia only a few weeks. Survived by two sisters Anna Jolly of Restopia Columbus Junction and Edna Luckey of Wyman.

Mid-Prairie School Site Hearing Set for August 15

The appeal of a local ruling on the Mid-Prairie District high school site is scheduled for August 15 at 9 30 a.m. The Kalona residents had sought to halt construction near Wellman, with the appeal filed to the State Department of Public Instruction after the county superintendent rejected their request.

Illinois Man Slightly Hurt in Highway 218 Crash

George H. Smith of Kirkwood Illinois suffered minor cuts and bruises in a two car crash on highway 218 Tuesday at 11 am. Francis William Schnoebelen of Riverside drove south and turned into a farm driveway missing the approach of the Illinois car. Damage to the vehicles was about $900.

Gates of Dam Salvage Abandoned After Failure

KEOKUK, IOWA UP I The Union Electric Co abandoned efforts to salvage four 16 ton gates from the Mississippi River spillway at the dam. A spokesman said cable pulls failed and recovery may resume later. Three other gates remain missing after being washed out last April by ice and high water.

Weather Iowa Five Day Outlook With Showers and Warm Spells

Partly cloudy to Thursday with scattered showers or thunderstorms east and south. Cooler tonight especially north and east. Lows 60 to 70, highs Thursday 80s. Scattered showers kept warm into Friday. Five day forecast shows temperatures 5 to 8 degrees below normal early in the period then warming by week end. Highs 80 to 85, lows 56 to 62 with about a quarter inch of precipitation from scattered showers and thunder showers.
