Drought Disaster Areas Expanded Across 16 Iowa Counties

Rocket Sets Record of Over 1 900 MPH
LA Col. Frank Everest chief of Edwards flight test flew the stainless X2 rocket at over 1,900 mph near California on July 25, a speed near three times the speed of sound. The test aimed to study the thermal barrier for high speed flights. The flight, released from a bomber, did not set an official world record. The prior world speed record stood at 1,150 mph.

Hog Prices Little Below Last Year
Iowa State College farm economist Steve Hiemstra said late summer hog prices should stay just below last year’s level. He predicted a mild seasonal decline as slaughter rises and a 13 to 14 cent bottom for interior prices, with fall breeding intentions down seven percent from 1955 signaling a stronger winter market. He also noted slaughter by October to December should run well below 1955 levels.

SSgt. Matthew McKeon faces a seven officer jury at Parris Island to determine manslaughter or accidental death of six recruits during a night march. The Worcester Mass. native is charged with manslaughter oppression of troops and drinking in front of enlisted men. Leonard Larson 16, son of Merlin and Mrs Larson of near Grandview, drowned near lock and dam 17 on the Mississippi River near New Boston Illinois around 2:30 p.m. Thursday after a fishing trip ended with a swim.
