Three or four detasseling crews in the county finished their work yesterday and others were expected to be released gradually next week or two. Foster Bickel, general supervisor for John Patterson Seed Company, said the peak season has passed. The season was unusually short starting July 21 as hybrid corn fields reached tasseling stage.

Revere Man Pays Fine after DUI Conviction
Pearl Irvin of Revere Missouri paid a $3800 fine and costs after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was dismissed from county jail after the Thursday court ruling. Sitdown Strike Halts Tree Cutting In Oskaloosa
Oskaloosa women halted a highway widening by sitting down on the job. District Judge R G Yoder issued a temporary injunction restraining the highway commission and city council from cutting 137 trees along Avenue A. Davenport Grain Elevator Destroyed by Fire
Fire destroyed the Davenport grain elevator in West Bend with about 2004 bushels of grain inside. Firefighters from West Bend Algona Whittemore and Emmetsburg battled the four hour blaze. warehouses nearby were not badly damaged. Manager James Olson could not determine the fire’s cause or total damage.

Search Continues For Missing French Plane
Paris officials said no American or British passengers were aboard the six engined Latecoere 31 that vanished in mid Atlantic on a West Indies to Africa flight. The craft carried 40 passengers and 12 crew. A full passenger list would be released today as American and French ships and aircraft resumed the search throughout the day. Air France grounded all sister ships of the missing plane pending further notice amid the Atlantic tragedy.
