Prices for hogs surged to record highs at Cleveland and Chicago as market receipts remained tight. Chicago and New York wholesale meat costs rose, with Cleveland topping $32 per hundredweight and Chicago at $31.10, surpassing prior records.
The official weather observer reports Washington received 8.03 inches of rain in July, a record since records began. Last July recorded only 0.63 inch, with temperatures from 52 to 99 degrees.
William Palmer of Washington was fined 50 dollars and costs on three counts after being found snagging fish at dam No. 17 below Muscatine. Conservation agent Dan Nichols reported Palmer's first offense and a second snagging during a return visit led to immediate arraignment before Justice John Dickson. An 80 dollar fine was suspended for each count.
Iowa Amvets at Waterloo urge a 10 percent state job quota for disabled veterans and transfer of control of the Marshalltown Old Soldiers Home to veteran organizations. They also support education benefits for children of deceased veterans and a national school for state department employees abroad.
Funeral services for Lewis Peters 64 lifelong resident of Columbus Junction were held Sunday afternoon at Central Presbyterian Church. The Rev BE R Mitchell State Center officiated with a quartet singing. Burial followed at Cambrian cemetery southwest of Columbus City. Pallbearers were Roger Peters LeRoy Hughes Ervin Williams Irvin Beauchamp Stanley and Lee Arthur.

A large barn, a corn crib, and several outbuildings on Sam Harrison’s farm near Haskins were destroyed by a Sunday evening fire. The wind limited spread to the farmhouse, insurance partially covered the loss, and a tractor and equipment were ruined. One hog perished. cause undetermined.

More than 300 people watched speed and stunt planes at an Armory Field event staged by Focus Model Plane Builders. The gathering aimed to spark hobby interest and form a local model plane club with a first meeting to be announced. Notable flyer Armananey of East Moline wowed spectators with an original Atwood engine powered model. Paris reports a late 1940s six engined Latecoere flying boat with 52 on board vanished on a trans Atlantic flight from Fort de France to Port En tienne. Air France and French naval units searched the Atlantic 1,400 miles west of Africa as U S Coast Guard and American radio observers tracked the missing airliner amid fears of a major disaster.
Former communist official Louis Budenz testified before Senate and HUAC that U S Reds organized many spy rings to steal military and diplomatic secrets for Russia. He said two groups of government employees collected data during the war for transmission to USSR and warned there are many more rings to uncover.
Sheriff H M Putnam left Sunday for Stockton California to bring back Arthur Capper of Wellman who is wanted on a charge of selling mortgaged property Capper is held by authorities there awaiting the sheriff’s arrival.
Howard E. Walker left Saturday by plane for Stockton California to reunite with Mrs. Walker and their son Billy after a search since Saturday evening July 17 when they disappeared from the Wellman home. Authorities learned of their location via checks mailed to a Kalona bank dated July 22.
Taft warns that approving Taft-Ellender-Wagner housing bill as written could raise inflation. He supports passing some housing legislation, but the outlook at the short session remains dim. Republican policy chiefs say they do not plan to pass the long-disputed bill, now stuck in the House Rules Committee.
A Republican effort to end the southern anti-poll tax filibuster failed as Senate President Vandenberg ruled cloture could not be invoked on the motion to consider the measure. State University of Iowa hospitals admitted 200 582 patients in the year July 1 1947 to June 30 1948 up 2276 from the previous year. Expanded capacity to 900 beds included an unused ward opened last October and outside quarters for overnight patients. The system employed 65 staff physicians 116 residents 20 interns 280 graduate nurses 142 student nurses and 58 medical clerks. Ambulances covered the state averaging 7500 miles monthly carrying 25673 patients this year.
The trial of George Bb. Miller and Ben B. Miller for assault and battery was postponed until Thursday, August 0, as counsel for the defendants appeared before Mayor G. E. Mave Inetty police court this morning.

Representing nine Farm Bureau districts, the leaders include Mrs. Wilder Mattocks, L O Weston, Mrs. Earl Dean, and others from towns such as Wadena, Stanley, Mason City, Newton, Madrid, Tipton, Grand View, Indianola, Van Meter, Atlantic, and Ouneil Blutts.
