Iowa report shows 138 traffic deaths in the first six months 1945, down from 148 in 1944. One person died every 31 hours, with 70 of the fatalities at night. Train deaths totaled 28, pedestrain deaths 39, and 35 counties had no traffic deaths.
Des Moines Gov. Blue named Arthur T. Donhowe vice president of Central National Bank to replace B. Frank Kauffman on the Iowa banking board. The governor also added two other appointees while Melvin W. Bilis remains as superintendent and serves automatically. The board meets monthly, advises the state superintendent, and pays per diem only.
Milford Beeghly of Pierson expands charges against American Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance and Secretary Guy L. Roberts. He alleges Roberts and others erased 4304 policies between 1940 and 1944 and that records show terminations without cause on a broad scale. He also claims a plan to cut policyholders and distribute surplus by a dividend to remaining members.
James Wall nine, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Wall of St Paul Minnesota, died after falling into a hay water on the Mrs Mary Jirutek farm near here. Dr T Frank Hersch Linn county coroner said both legs were severed and hemorrhage caused death. He died en route to Cedar Rapids hospital. Two farm hands said the boy lost balance while handling wire on bays.
Two Des Moines men escaped serious injury when their semi trucks sideswiped on a bridge three miles east of Iowa City. Calvin Hebertee drove a beer load for Wood and Fender Transportation of Des Moines. The Kemp Feed Co truck driven by J Arthur Ryan sustained about $1,000 damage.
The Washington county annual boys and girls 4-H achievement show runs August 22 and 23 with exhibits at the Armory for boys and the Methodist church for girls. Highlights include 56 baby beeves 18 purebred litters and an auction at 1:00 p m on August 23. Judging starts 9:00 a m August 22.
The European corn borer was detected in all parts of the county with varying damage. In one inspected field 65 to 76 hills per 1QU harbored borers and injuries include holes in leaves and leaf whorls, tunnels causing stalk damage and ear fallout. Detasseling work begins with 279 signups, John Patterson leading four Pioneer crews, and about 300 total workers anticipated.

Cloyd Denman Hunt died yesterday afternoon at his San Gabriel home after a several months illness. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday in San Gabriel. Mrs. Hunt is the youngest sister of Mrs. A Anderson, while another sister, Mrs. Grace Anderson, recently went to San Gabriel to be with the Hunts.
Alois Hitler, half brother of Adolf Hitler, received a clean bill of health from British authorities and was released from custody today in Germany. The report notes he is now free, with officials providing no further details.
Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary report about eleven tons of waste paper salvaged last week. Over eight tons came from homes, nearly three tons remained in salvage bins around the square, with country people contributing much. The same groups will run August salvage in Washington and plan home collection later in the month.
Keith Farrier pleaded guilty at a Brighton hearing before Justice R W Fillmore to unlawful overtaking on a curve with limited view. He received a $25 fine plus costs related to a July 8 crash on Highway 92 between Washington and Ainsworth that killed Priscilla Dickinson.
Mrs. Kate Richardson 81 died Thursday evening in Calvert City Kentucky after a month’s visit with a daughter. Funeral two pm Saturday at Sherman’s with burial at Woodlawn. Born Katherine Flood November 14 1863 in New York, she lived in Washington 75 years. Surviving sons Clarence Wilbur Vernon Perry daughter Elgie Faughn and 16 grandchildren. One son Lloyd preceded her.
A. V. Alexander was appointed first lord of the admiralty in the Attlee Labour government, succeeding the Churchill coalition era. The shift marks a key cabinet change as Clement Attlee leads Britain.
D K Pence plans to open a Gamble hardware store with radios refrigerators and washing machines in a vacant east side space on South Town Avenue near J E Lemmon drugstore. He and his wife will live above the store, remodeling underway with a target opening by early September. Pence, recently discharged from four and a half years as a fighter pilot in three war theaters, brings experience from Knoxville Creston Osceola and Trenton Missouri. Thompson owns the building and plans for upstairs apartments later.
After meeting King George VI at Buckingham Palace Prime Minister Attlee announced new appointments. James Chuter Ede was named secretary of state for the home department and Lord Addison became dominion secretary with additional cabinet changes.
Fairfield newcomer Ralph Bell began work yesterday at Picken's for Tires. He will help in the front room and serve as outside salesman. Bell, discharged from the merchant marine last March, has rented a room at 11 East Washington street and lists fishing as his chief hobby.

In Tokyo, radio claimed heavy bomber activity near Tokyo and Nagasaki raids, while Halsey’s fleet remains under blackout after a major carrier strike. Lt. James H. Doolittle urged a single supreme commander for the Pacific war.
