Tanker Burns Off Staten Island After Fire and Explosions
The tanker J. Norman Riley carrying 175000 to 200000 gallons of gasoline burned to the water’s edge off Kreischerville Staten Island. Fire started in the galley and spread rapidly with explosions. Captain Wilfred Mason and sailor Carl Peterson were seriously burned and taken to a hospital. two injured aboard were the only casualties. The ship was towed into shallow water and allowed to burn out as flames could not be extinguished.
