Troop E of the Iowa national guard based in Ottumwa will move to Newton next week if martial law is not continued there. Captain M B Hardsocg, commander, was ordered by Adjt Gen Charles H Grahl to assemble six troopers and three officers for the deployment.
The Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern Interurban line sues gravel truck driver William Powers for 996 dollars, claiming damage to its line car after a grade crossing crash.
Dayton voters pass a 15090 dollar bond issue to build an auditorium and gymnasium as part of a school addition. The tally was 191 for and 113 against, a margin of eight votes over the 60 percent requirement. The total cost is 28250 dollars with the Public Works Administration covering the balance.
Newton reports a boy skeleton found at the city dump identified as a morcy used for medical study. Dr. E McMurray of Jasper County cites markings as evidence while noting uncertainty on the bones source. The bones were believed discarded by a physician’s wife to remove them from their home.

The cattle were bought ten months earlier weighing 850 pounds and fed corn and minerals. Last week he sold 42 head lighter than the previous consignment to Chicago for slaughter.
Ray Kauffman and Gerry Mefford, Iowa land jobbers turned seamen, return to the United States landing at Mobile Alabama after three years and four months aboard a 45 foot boat named The Hurricane. They are greeted at the Buccaneer Yacht club by parents city officials and yachting enthusiasts. They sailed around the world during the voyage and are tanned and smiling as they greet family.
Des Moines public schools face heavy funding from local property taxes. Superintendent A. W. Merrill argues state aid is low at 1.4 percent, urging revisions and support from other wealth-based taxes to ease local burdens. The report cites benefits seen in other states.

Washington August 2 The Securities and Exchange Commission led by Smith W Brookhart announced a formal inquiry against Alleghany Corporation to start August 11. The probe will seek information on alleged false and misleading statements including understated net losses for 1934 and 1936 and overstated 1937 profits by about 27000 each year for improper amortization and bond discount write offs. The case ties into a larger railroad control investigation linked to the Van Sweringens and notes claimed capital surplus losses from 1931 to 1937 of 23000000.
Captain Brown received word from Adjutant General Grahl that Troop F, 113th Cavalry, may be sent to Newton by Saturday if the Maytag factory strike remains unsettled. Drill night was held as crews were briefed on potential call to duty and martial law enforcement duties amid ongoing negotiations.

In a brief adjourned session the council approved a week of paid vacation for four Washington streets and sewers employees with five years on the payroll. Dick Bidwell heads the list with 25 years of service, followed by Harry Miller Clarence Griffin and D C Dole.
