Joyce Swartzendruber of Wellman starts as a soil conservation aide for Washington County. Howard yhr, chair of the district commissioners, announced the hire. Swartzendruber, 23, will assist in field surveys and design, helping with terracing ponds and good practices. She attended Goshen College and previously worked at an area sale barn before beginning July 29.

Wayland crash injures Washington man after vehicle hits paving machine
Washington man Steven M. Walters, 21, was seriously hurt near Wayland when his car sped through a paving machine. Walters sustained severe head injuries after the top of his car was flattened by the venturing machine. Wayland Marshal William Brooks followed Walters for about a half mile before the crash. The vehicle plowed through barricades near the Washington Henry County line as paving crews prepared to reopen the road. Undercarriage and machine damage were extensive. Walters was taken to University Hospital in Iowa City.

Mild weather greets big event County Fair opens
The Washington County Fair opened its four day season under crystal skies and mild temperatures. Preliminary 4 H and FFA judging began in eight categories with mid morning to late afternoon sessions. Tonight the tractor pull sponsored by the Iowa Tractor Pullers Association offers 2800 in prize money across seven classes. Lightning ignites massive county barn near Washington
A weekend blaze destroyed a large all wood two story barn on the McCleery-Cumming Co farm five miles southwest of Washington. The fire, blamed on lightning, razed 64 by 80 feet with two additions and wiped out 3000 bales of straw and multiple wagons and plows. Firefighters fought three hours amid rain and wind as the storm knocked down limbs and caused minor damages in the area.
