Des Moines reports drought worsens in southern Iowa with corn crops ruined and livestock suffering. Forecast predicts showers only in eastern Iowa tonight, cooler western highs around six degrees lower, while Clarinda hit 97 and Estherville 58 yesterday.
A hearing before the Iowa state board of health style commissioner is planned Friday on sewage disposal plants and river pollution. Dr Boice of Washington and Dr Bierring may attend. Cities including Taberville Mamettsburg Ft Dodge Noone Des Moines and Ottumwa may be ordered to install plants to stop Des Moines river contamination.
Word received of Mose DeMarce former Washington resident and civil war veteran who enlisted in the 25th Iowa infantry. He died at Eldon where he had lived for a number of years.
The Washington Concert Band hires L. Mannhardt with Neil Humble as director and a soloist to perform in March. A composer sent an original copy to Mannhardt for an overture. The group notes high demand for past numbers and invites requests from patrons.
In New Orleans on August 1 Mayor T S Walmsley launched a mobilization to oppose Huey Long and his National Guardsmen besieging City Hall. Police strength rose from 840 to 1 944 as volunteers sworn in for emergency duty received guns. Long's forces ordered 640 Guards to be subject to the state political call amid preparations for the upcoming primary. Hand grenades and tear gas bombs issued as Long alleges 24 500 names scratched from city registration rolls.
Missouri and Oklahoma reports say Jim Clark, leader of Kansas City prison breaks, was arrested at his Tulsa apartment by highway patrol and federal agents. Frank Delmar was captured. two gang members remained at large, following the Lansing prison break earlier. In Mexico Missouri, two Indiana convicts were captured foiling another escape attempt.
NEUDECK Germany Aug 1 President von Hindenburg's doctors say he has less than 24 hours to live. Chancellor Hitler arrives to pay respects and is expected to take over presidency while preserving the chancellery until his elevation is confirmed. The aged leader is said to be weakening with a slow pulse and numbness as he contemplates Germany's crisis and the monarchy as a final preference.
Work to merge CC B Q lines with M J L interests west of Brighton Iowa involves laying a connecting track and transferring rights from Coppock to Brighton and Oska loosa to Tracy. The plan consolidates routes from Winfield to Coppock and Martinsburg to OsKaloosa with heavier Burlington rails to handle increased traffic by December 31 1934 per railroad commission orders.
A Monday softball benefit match at the troop field raises funds for Washington girls hurt in the Riverside wreck. Managers Les Kicher and Dr. A W Clow will lead teams. Gate free, collection taken, proceeds to the girls. Popcorn and drinks sold to boost the fund.
Details show John Burnett aged 25 and William C. Jay aged 43 conspired with two other desperadoes who escaped Michigan City penitentiary to steal fans from a military school and then rob banks across the west. Burnett and Jay were captured in a car. Burnett was shot as he drew a shotgun.
Ill Rogers notes that Ho Roosevelt’s Hawaii trip drew attention despite poor fishing. Voters quip that the island’s Democrats are gone and the visit made a big splash, though the decisive “fish” failed to bite.
The Cedar Falls Municipal band under Director Milburn A McKay delivered a polished indoor performance of Offenbach Orpheus and the Golden Dragon overture by King. Soloists impressed and the ensemble showed precise cohesion as Rich ard McCleery praised the group. Miss Lenora Alin of Wellman visits the Hubbell home near Ainsworth.
Do C Patterson chairman of the Washington county corn hog committee reports steady progress on signatures for contracts to be forwarded to Washington DC next week. Seven have refused to sign, about a dozen appealed to the county board of review. Buckwheat ruled a grain crop not forage, may replace abandoned crop land if no 1934 harvest occurred before planting buckwheat.
Robert Embree and Oral Ulin of Wellman plead guilty before Justice J B Bovee to possessing four pheasants killed with a club on a roadside. They receive fifteen days jail, sentence suspended. William Embree’s similar charge was dismissed. Deputy game warden T K Johnston filed the charges. County Attorney George Morrison prosecuted.
National Guard troops tightened lines at industrial fronts as violence threats grew. In Minneapolis a strike-related shooting left John Realtor dead. police fired on pickets. Bridgeport Alabama authorities appealed for troops after a night of terror amid factory attacks. Chicago stockyard workers joined the walkout, with 8,000 more expected. National Guard remained in martial law at Kovaler Wisconsin.
A six county effort named the New Deal Party was outlined by Young Democratic club delegates in Iowa City. The plan includes a dance, candidate presentations, and a keynote to be announced, slated for August 23. Counties Cedar, Johnson, Louisa, Washington, Muscatine, Iowa, and the State University of Iowa join, with participation invited from all Democrats. Delegate Berniece Adrian represented locals at the meeting.
John H. Mc Donald, 26, allegedly attempted to steal a coat by trying it on in front of a broken clothing store window. Police captured him after a vain effort to flee.
Official July report shows 6.17 inches of rain, more than the prior six months combined. A single week brought most of the precipitation, while July highs reached 90 or more on 25 days and 109 or above on eight days, with a monthly mean near historic lows.
Case and L. J. Kehoe of Wellman are identified as the defense party in the ongoing legal matter.
