The Washington summer street program started on West Main Street delayed by weekend rain. Crews will cover six blocks through Wednesday then move to South Marion Avenue. Asphalt overlays planned for all 1974 streets. Residents should keep cars off work zones.
The Iowa Senate approved a bill by a 40-3 vote to fund hot lunches in public and nonpublic schools with 1.35 million dollars. The measure dedicates 110 thousand dollars to nonpublic schools and moves to the House. Weather outlook: fair to partly cloudy and cool this afternoon, becoming partly cloudy and warmer tomorrow with highs in the mid to upper 60s.
Washington hosts 120 visitors from 50 Iowa and Illinois communities for Tender Loving Care Day. The event launches Capital Funds Campaign seeking 400000 for a 38 bed Health Care Center with tours, picnic, dinner, and activities at Sunset Park Captain's Table YMCA and Country Club. Rev. Robert H. French leads the dinner program. Board members cover the day’s costs.
The Old Creamery Theatre Company's Magic Factory will be performed May 10 from 1 to 2 30 p m in the Washington High School auditorium. Washington SCAD sponsors a benefit for elementary age children with tickets at Falk Clothing Store. The 55 minute story theatre features Gustav Green The Emperor's New Clothes Mr Vinegar and The Seven Fools in a jungle gym set designed as the magic factory.
Mayor John Hazelett triggered an underground explosion at 12 10 p m to free water clogged by rock in a 218 foot well. The 20 charges aimed to open holes in rock deposits and increase output beyond about 20 gallons a minute. If successful, the method may be tried on other wells, with temporary water from Riverside and Washington supplies in place.
County Extension Director Jim Frier says 1974 brings shortages and higher costs that may force farmers to cut corn plantings. More acres, mainly in corn, are forecast but fertilizer and input costs drive caution. Exports and weather add risk while soybeans remain viable and yields may fall.
President Nixon turns over about 1 200 pages of transcripts to House impeachment investigators with a White House summary claiming no criminal activity and no prior knowledge of the Watergate plot. The White House plans public release of the full transcripts later, while disputing Dean’s testimony and stressing openness despite selective omissions.
The Follies, a vaudeville review at Washington High School auditorium Thursday at 8 PM, features the Hi Fi s Jay Luther Shaha and the Shough Band with guest acts Gay Paree Dance Ensemble Flora Dora Sextet and American Graphooey. Proceeds support the American Field Service student. Tickets $1 from local vendors or at the door.
Washington City Council voted to permanently close three park entrances at Sunset Park and install about 13 speed breakers while lowering the park speed limit from 15 to 10 mph. The action, taken with the Park Board, aims to reduce joy riding and vandalism after prior re routing efforts.
