He dismissed rumors of a four day week and said more hours could accelerate the session. He also endorsed a bill giving the Highway Commission power to condemn property within six months to avoid delays on Interstate 380, noting a landowner’s refusal to settle could push completion two years behind schedule.

Trucker Fines Could Double Under Subcommittee Plan

A Iowa legislative subcommittee proposes nearly doubling oversize and overweight truck fines to boost highway revenue from about 3 million to 5 to 6 million. The plan uses a straight percentage formula, with fines rising as overweight increases and applies a new method for permit violations. For example, a 12 percent overweight would cost 80 dollars under the subcommittee, 120 under a rival proposal, and a 16 percent overweight would be 52.60, 120, or 150 respectively. The move targets funding for local schools and shifts from the current, more complex schedule.
