5377 Persons Killed In Highway Accidents In 1940 Des Moines
Des Moines reports 537 people died in highway crashes during 1940. Most fatalities occurred at modest speeds in fair weather, with 97 deaths at 20 to 30 mph and 57 at 15 to 20 mph. Only five deaths were from speeds over 70 mph, though one in five crashes at that speed were deadly. Five thousand copies of the survey will be distributed to safety councils and schools. The finding warns that safety lapses occur when conditions seem safest.
