The official observer reports 7.93 inches of rain in Washington for April, a record in the county's rainfall history. Farmers face delayed spring work with 90 to 95 percent of oats seeding done and much plowing still to finish as wet conditions persist.
At the junction of Highways 218 and 22, Weber’s Y service station sits beside a fast flowing flood channel after six and a half inches of rain. A stream carried 130 bullheads from a nearby farm pond to Weber’s front step, creating an unexpected fish collection for the proprietor.
Mississippi flood waters surge through Davenport area after a 1000 foot levee breach. Levees fail at Milan and Quincy as volunteers, mostly students, reinforce dikes. Flood crest forecast near 22.5 feet at Davenport and higher downstream, with many homes and facilities endangered and shelters at capacity.
In Bettendorf Iowa 75 students from grades and colleges join to reinforce a high sandbag dike along Duck Creek amid a Mississippi flood. They shovel sand load trucks while guarding the wall as water geysers through a hole. National Guard troops order evacuation as rock ballast is added to save the dike. The scene echoes in other towns as youths volunteer in the flood effort.
4 H girls leaders plan a meeting May 4 at 1 15 pm at the fairgrounds. Sally Smith reports the spring Home Economics 4 H Club event will feature materials on special projects demonstrations style revue and summer scheduling. Leaders may ask questions about achievement shows and the fair.
Licensing of bicycles is continuing at the office of the chief of police in Washington City Hall with 227 licenses issued this morning. Licenses are available 8 am to 3 pm requiring make color and registration number for a 25 cent license. The first dividend from licensing has been received and a stolen bike was traced by its license number.
Fort Dodge authorities investigated a blaze southeast of the city that killed two middle aged men. The fire was first spotted by Frank Groat, owner of the farm and Clyde Groat’s uncle, who drove to the house and tried to enter but was forced back by flames.
Sunshine arrived in Iowa but temperatures stayed chilly with a forecast for fair weather for the next couple of days. Rain ended in eastern Iowa overnight with lows from 28 at Waterloo and Spencer to 39 at Davenport.
United Press International seeks a correction after Rep. William Dickinson alleged sex orgies and immorality during the Selma to Montgomery march. Protestant and Catholic marchers deny the accusations, presenting letters and affidavits from clergy and students. UPI notes Dickinson asked reporters and a staff photographer to sign false affidavits, which they refused.
Attendance was strong at two coaching sessions in the Washington YMCA building fund campaign. A makeup session is planned for Thursday April 29 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the YMCA building, conducted by Don Minick and Dr. Calvin Larsen to inform workers about the campaign.
Washington Y's Men and others star in Teahouse of the August Moon with a Tuesday dress rehearsal before an audience. Opening night is tonight at 8 in the high school auditorium. Brisk sales continue and good seats remain at the door until curtain.
Washington High School junior class members were chosen as candidates for the 1965 66 student body president race Rex Newhart Max Mayer Tim Trotman and Bill Hardy were nominated in Monday primary elections A political convention will be held Thursday at 2 49 p m in the school auditorium to place the names in nomination and demonstrations will be conducted By Friday voting will occur all day with booths set up in the hallways
Police report a light beige 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air, license 92 4416, stolen Tuesday afternoon from a parking spot west of Geb Chevrolet garage where Robert Wide of Washington works. An alert has been issued.
U S Marines strike out from Da Nang in the war’s largest search and clear mission west of the base. Gen Wallace M Greene says the force will seek out Viet Cong and kill, with about 10 000 Marines in the Da Nang area and reports of a new battalion ready to deploy. Greene dismisses claims of additional battalions and leaves for Hawaii after presenting a captured submachinegun to the Marine museum.
