Tokyo radio claimed two allied cruisers and four transports were sunk by enemy action near the Philippines area while American forces pressed advances on Minandanao and northern Luzon. British spearheads moved toward Kaungoon in southern Burma as fighting continued.
Mrs. Paul Benell received a telegram from her husband Private Benell recently freed from a German prison camp. The message stated operation over and that he is in hospital with condition satisfactory. Benell was captured November 26 and liberated after a radio broadcast on April 16.
A fine service was held at the Church of the Nazarene and evangelist Rev. William Kelly provided uplifting messages. The Sunday school begins at 10 with a cradle roll dedication after class, then Mr. Kelly speaks, and the young people's service starts at 7 15 followed by the evangelistic service.
Police arrested six men on assault charges in Cedar Rapids over a wage dispute between Century Cab Co and Local 238 of the Truck Drivers Union. They allegedly attacked Milo Abernathy Jr. and W. W. Perry. Bonds were set at $2000. Detective Inspector Kurna noted a former driver among the suspects and said picketing is allowed but violence will not be tolerated.
Des Moines report shows 568 new venereal disease cases in 1944 among 15 to 19 year olds, up from 11,3939 figures. Gonorrhea up with 459 new infections 207 boys and 262 girls. syphilis down from 1939 totals with 21 boys and 58 girls in 1944.
Des Moines reports Iowa has lost 5 728 service members in World War II since Pearl Harbor, with 2 150 more deaths than World War I totals. April alone added 375 fatalities, and March saw the worst month with 543 deaths.
Winneshiek County Cooperative Burial Association and eleven similar Iowa groups won a district court ruling as Attorney General Rankin had argued illegal embalming. Judge Cooney found the state failed to prove the association engaged in embalming without a license or that a proper demand was made by a private citizen before suit.
Des Moines reports a gambler Ralph Blackburn, $7, who challenged long-established Polk County rings, was shot in the right leg at 4 12 am. He arrived at Broadlawns General Hospital with a calf wound and was later moved to the Veterans hospital. He told detectives those Dagoes are trying to run me out of town.
In San Francisco on April 28 the United Nations conference opened under a supreme council of four foreign ministers. The United States plans to propose postwar treaty review including Poland actions to correct injustices, a move likely to meet Russian opposition, based on Senator Arthur Vandenberg’s proposal approved by the American delegation.
BRIGHTON April 28 BT Woody Nash died shortly before noon at his Brighton home after a period of poor health. Funeral arrangements handled by Hosk ins funeral home are pending. Survived by his wife two sons Warren of Brighton and Charles at home six daughters Luella Mullikin in Pennsylvania Stella Rich of Brighton and Gertrude Hattie Beatrice and Mary at home.
Leonard Young recalls finding a large mushroom and a nearby neat heap of coins totaling $2.88 in old pennies dimes and nickels. The coins were corroded and appeared long neglected, offering an odd incentive for those mushrooming this season.

A Swiss diplomatic source arriving at the border says Adolf Hitler and Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels were shot days ago. Heinrich Himmler allegedly hurried to Bertin Plane with General Schellenberg. Otto Meissner’s fate uncertain as Himmler may have ordered his arrest. Report also claims SS squads executed eight German generals and several high officers over Goering’s treason charges.
The American 3rd and 7th armies advance on northern and western roads to Munich as Bremen dock area falls to the Allies. Moscow reports Berlin siege nearing end with Tiergarten storming and Wilhelmstrasse districts in reach. Soviet forces prepare junctions near Elbe and across Berlin with American and Russian lines linking south of the city.
A Zurich dispatch says the American Fifth Army reached the Swiss frontier and drove a 60 mile gap through northern Italy, trapping tens of thousands of Germans and isolating Milan and Turin. It reports American forces entering Como and Milan, with patriot radio claiming Milan has been linked but not confirmed. Turin is said to be cut off with routes to Austria severed.
