In Pasadena California United Press International reports Surveyor 3 used its robot television eye to observe a lump of lunar topsoil on a footpad after scooping it up with a claw scoop. The compressed dirt resembled fine Earth soil and was photographed through color filters for processing on Earth.
The Baldwin High School “granny rebellion” expands as 12 students adopt floor length dresses, four inches below the knee, led by Thyra Sweet of nearby Bietly. Principal Donald Spohn notes growing national interest and letters from Germany and the London Daily Mirror about the modesty shift.
Robert Cliff Daly an 18 year old from Evergreen Colorado, 4 feet 10 and a half inches tall, was sworn in as the smallest modern U S Army recruit. He secured a medical waiver to enlist and aims to be a tunnel rat in Vietnam. Daly pledged to serve his country, even at the cost of his life, despite initial rejection for height requirements.
Powell's lawyers prepare an appeal strategy aiming to have the court declare the House action unconstitutional rather than issue an injunction.
